In a progressive step towards preserving linguistic and cultural heritage, the Tripura government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Reang community’s long-standing demands for the official recognition of their mother tongue, Kau Bru, and the declaration of Hojagiri Day as a government holiday.
A key meeting was held at the Tripura Forest Development and Plantation Corporation Limited (TFDPC) conference hall near Agartala’s Circuit House on Saturday. Representatives of the Reang community, including intellectuals, artists, and writers, engaged with state officials to push their demands.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the government’s proactive measures to protect Tripura’s linguistic diversity. He revealed that a special committee has already been formed to facilitate the development of Kau Bru.
“The state government is committed to preserving and promoting all languages, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on mother tongues. We aim to ensure no language in Tripura is allowed to fade away,” Nath stated.
The Reang community views the recognition of Kau Bru and the declaration of Hojagiri Day as integral to their cultural identity. Hojagiri, a traditional dance of the Reang tribe, is central to their heritage. Nath commended the community’s efforts in safeguarding their traditions and assured that their demands are under active consideration by the government.
The meeting also highlighted the inclusive policies of the BJP-led coalition government in addressing the needs of Tripura’s indigenous communities. Minister Nath noted that while many tribal communities primarily speak Kokborok, the government is equally invested in preserving other languages such as those spoken by the Reang, Debbarma, Tripuri, Jamatia, Noatia, Kalai, and Murasing communities.
Santirbazar MLA Pramod Reang and other prominent Bru representatives submitted a memorandum detailing the community’s aspirations to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha during the meeting.
This initiative underscores the government’s broader commitment to safeguarding the linguistic and cultural heritage of Tripura’s indigenous tribes. Nath expressed optimism about fulfilling these demands and reinforcing the cultural identity of the Reang community.
The Reang community has expressed gratitude for the government’s support and hopes for expedited action on their demands, marking a significant step toward preserving Tripura’s rich cultural mosaic.
