Tripura government boosts tribal girls’ education with new hostels in Karbook. Minister Bikash Debbarma inaugurates a 50-seat tribal girls’ hostel and lays foundation for another, aiming to improve higher education access for girls in remote hill regions.
The Government of Tripura has taken another significant step toward strengthening educational opportunities for girls in tribal and remote hill regions. Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma announced the inauguration of a new 50-seat tribal girls’ hostel in the Karbook subdivision, highlighting the state’s commitment to improving access to higher education for young women from marginalized communities.
Speaking at a special program held in the tribal-dominated region, the minister emphasized that ensuring educational access for girls in remote areas remains one of the government’s highest priorities. According to him, many girls from tribal families are often forced to abandon their dreams of higher education due to the lack of safe and suitable accommodation near educational institutions.

To address this challenge, the government inaugurated a newly constructed 50-seat tribal girls’ hostel attached to Vidya Jyoti Silachari Higher Secondary School under the Karbook subdivision. The facility is expected to provide safe residential accommodation to tribal girls studying in the school and nearby institutions, allowing them to continue their education without logistical barriers.
In addition to the inauguration, the minister also virtually laid the foundation stone for another 50-seat Scheduled Tribe girls’ hostel linked to Karbook Panghuan Higher Secondary School. The proposed hostel aims to further expand residential facilities for tribal students in the region.
“Education is the foundation that makes a society confident and self-reliant,” said Minister Debbarma while addressing the gathering. He stressed that the government is committed to creating an environment where girls from tribal communities can pursue their education in safety and dignity.
He also noted that the absence of proper accommodation facilities has historically been one of the biggest obstacles for girls living in remote hill areas. Many families hesitate to send their daughters far from home due to safety concerns and lack of hostel facilities, leading to a significant gap in higher education participation.
By constructing dedicated hostels for tribal girls, the government aims to bridge this gap and ensure that young women from remote villages receive equal opportunities to pursue academic and professional aspirations.

Officials present at the event highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader plan to strengthen educational infrastructure in tribal-dominated areas of the state. The government has been investing in hostels, scholarships, and improved school facilities to encourage greater participation of tribal students in secondary and higher education.
Education experts believe that residential facilities like these hostels can play a transformative role in improving enrollment and retention rates among girls from disadvantaged communities. Safe accommodation close to schools not only removes logistical barriers but also builds confidence among parents and guardians.
Minister Debbarma reaffirmed that the state government will continue expanding educational infrastructure in remote regions. The long-term goal, he said, is to ensure that every girl in tribal areas of Karbook and across South Tripura district has the opportunity to pursue her dreams without limitations.
