Tripura and Mizoram are moving towards resolving their long-pending border dispute through higher-level discussions, following a Home Secretary-level meeting in Agartala. Officials reviewed Survey of India documents and agreed that the disputed Phuldengsei village area would be settled through further consultations.
The long-pending border dispute between Tripura and Mizoram is expected to move towards a resolution following discussions between senior officials of the two states, Tripura Home Secretary Abhishek Singh said. He stated that the dispute is confined to a small portion of the inter-state boundary around Phuldengsei village and would be addressed through further discussions and an expected higher-level meeting.
The remarks came after a four-member delegation led by the Mizoram Home Secretary visited Tripura for discussions on the border issue. The meeting was held in Agartala as part of a process initiated following discussions at the North Eastern Council (NEC) level.
According to Abhishek Singh, the Tripura-Mizoram border issue was raised by Tripura Chief Minister during an NEC meeting. Following the discussion, it was decided that officials at the Home Secretary level from both states would hold talks to examine the matter and explore a way forward.
“During the NEC meeting, the honourable Chief Minister raised the issue of the border dispute between Tripura and Mizoram. At that point of time, it was decided that a Home Secretary-level meeting shall be organised,” Singh said.
Accordingly, the first phase of the discussions was conducted in Agartala, with officials from Tripura and Mizoram participating in detailed deliberations. The talks focused on documentary evidence and official records concerning the disputed portion of the boundary.
The officials also examined documents connected with the Survey of India, which is expected to play an important role in determining the status of the disputed area. The District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of North Tripura also participated in the discussions, according to the Tripura Home Secretary.
“We have discussed documents related to the Survey of India. We shall submit the documents and hopefully a higher-level meeting shall be organised,” Singh said.
He clarified that the dispute does not involve a large stretch of the Tripura-Mizoram border. Instead, it is concentrated around Phuldengsei village, where questions have arisen regarding the possession of a village council area.
“The dispute is related to a very small portion. The conflict is limited to Phuldengsei,” the Home Secretary said.
He further indicated that the question of possession would ultimately have to be determined on the basis of official survey records. “This village council was under possession. That will be decided by the Survey of India,” he said.
The latest meeting is being viewed as an important step in the effort to resolve the inter-state border issue through institutional dialogue rather than confrontation. The involvement of senior officials from both states also reflects the decision taken at the NEC level to address the matter through structured discussions.
However, the Tripura Home Secretary did not disclose a specific date or venue for the proposed higher-level meeting. He also did not provide details regarding the documents that both sides are expected to submit as part of the next stage of the process.

The submission and examination of the relevant Survey of India records are expected to form an important basis for subsequent discussions. With the disputed area described as being limited to Phuldengsei village, officials are hopeful that continued consultations at a higher level could pave the way for a mutually acceptable resolution to the long-standing Tripura-Mizoram border issue.
