In a major step toward enhancing road safety and encouraging public participation in emergency response, the Tripura government has stepped up efforts to promote the Centre’s recently launched ‘Rah-Veer’ Scheme. The initiative, aimed at motivating citizens to extend immediate assistance to road accident victims, offers a substantial cash reward of ₹25,000 to individuals who help save lives within the critical ‘Golden Hour’.

The announcement was made by Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury during a press interaction following a review meeting held at the State Guest House on Saturday. Chowdhury highlighted the scheme’s significance in strengthening the culture of civic responsibility and improving survival chances in road mishaps.

“The central government has launched the ‘Rah-Veer’ Scheme to encourage members of the public to come forward and help victims of road accidents during the golden hour. If someone saves a life by promptly taking the injured person to the hospital, they will be rewarded with ₹25,000,” Chowdhury stated. He added that this scheme has replaced the earlier ‘Good Samaritan’ initiative and includes a fivefold increase in the reward amount—from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000.

Golden Hour: A Lifesaving Window

The ‘Golden Hour’ is the first hour following a traumatic injury, especially in road accidents, during which timely medical treatment has the highest potential to save a life. Studies and medical experts emphasize that intervention within this hour can drastically reduce mortality. Recognizing this, the government hopes that the financial incentive under the ‘Rah-Veer’ Scheme will act as a catalyst for immediate public action.

According to the minister, to be eligible for the reward, certain criteria must be met, which are laid down in the scheme’s guidelines. However, the essence of the initiative remains rooted in quick, humane action to preserve life. “The goal is to instill confidence among people that helping an accident victim is not only morally right but also recognized and rewarded by the government,” Chowdhury explained.

Transport Department’s Review Meeting: Development and Digitization on the Agenda

The announcement came after the minister chaired a high-level review meeting with the Secretary of Transport and other senior officials. The meeting assessed the progress of various development projects and operational challenges within the department.

Highlighting the state’s investment in infrastructure, Chowdhury said, “Projects worth ₹150 crore are currently being implemented across Tripura. We have directed the concerned officials to ensure timely completion while maintaining quality standards.”

He also spoke on the transformative impact of digitization within the Transport Department. The minister noted that after implementing a fully cashless system for various services—such as vehicle registration, licensing, and tax payments—the department recorded an all-time high revenue collection of ₹155 crore. “The shift to cashless transactions has not only boosted revenue but also ensured greater transparency and efficiency in service delivery,” he remarked.

Focus on Strengthening eChallan System

Among the key issues discussed during the review was the enhancement of the eChallan system—a digital method for issuing traffic fines and monitoring violations. The Transport Department plans to strengthen this system further to improve enforcement and streamline penalties. “An efficient eChallan mechanism will help reduce traffic violations and promote safer roads,” Chowdhury emphasized.

Public Cooperation the Key to Road Safety

The minister reiterated that public cooperation is indispensable in addressing road safety challenges. With schemes like ‘Rah-Veer’, the government is not only offering financial incentives but also reinforcing the message that every citizen can play a part in saving lives.

“In many accidents, victims die simply because no one came forward in time. We hope that this increased reward will encourage people to act without fear or hesitation,” Chowdhury said, concluding his remarks.

The government is expected to roll out awareness campaigns soon to inform citizens about the ‘Rah-Veer’ Scheme and how to avail of the benefits. The initiative reflects a broader national strategy to reduce fatalities and improve emergency response in road accident scenarios.
