Congress Working Committee Demands Strong Action Against Pakistan After Pahalgam Attack
In a strongly worded resolution adopted on Friday, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) condemned the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists. The party’s top decision-making body expressed deep solidarity with the bereaved families and called for a united national response to hold Pakistan accountable for what it described as a “barbaric” act of terror.

The CWC resolution did not mince words, asserting that the time had come for India to demonstrate its collective resolve and “teach Pakistan a lesson” for its continued export of terrorism into Indian territory.
“The entire country awaits accountability, answers, and justice. The masterminds and perpetrators of this cowardly attack must face the full consequences of their actions,” the resolution read. The CWC squarely blamed Pakistan for sponsoring the attack and demanded firm diplomatic and strategic action to isolate the country on the global stage.
“This is not just a moment of mourning, but of resolve,” the CWC added, stating that this act of violence was a direct assault on India’s unity and peace. The Committee emphasized the importance of a clear, coherent response, urging the Central government to act with “firmness, strategic clarity, and international coordination.”
The resolution also highlighted the need for national unity in times of such crisis, cautioning against political opportunism. “This is not the time for partisan politics. We must rise above divides and send out an unambiguous message that India stands together, and will not be broken,” the party leadership said.

In a significant move, the Congress also raised questions over intelligence and security lapses, particularly in what is considered one of the most heavily guarded and sensitive regions of the country. “CWC reaffirms its earlier demand for time-bound accountability into the serious lapses in security and intelligence,” the statement noted.
Calling for an internal review, the Committee pressed the government to examine whether sufficient precautions and alerts were in place ahead of the attack, and what steps are being taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Beyond policy and security, the CWC also urged for comprehensive support for the victims’ families. “Compensation alone is not enough. Long-term rehabilitation, mental health support, and honouring the memory of those lost through national recognition and civic remembrance are equally essential,” the resolution stated.
The party has demanded that both state and central governments ensure sustained moral and institutional assistance for those affected by the attack.
The CWC concluded its resolution with a message to the people of India, appealing for unity and calm in the face of provocation. “Let our response to this act of terror reflect the strength of our democracy, the depth of our unity, and the resilience of our Republic,” it said.

The resolution by the CWC comes amid growing public anger over the Pahalgam attack and mounting calls for a decisive response from the Indian government. While no official statement from the Centre has directly named Pakistan, intelligence sources have pointed toward cross-border involvement in the incident, sparking demands for both diplomatic retaliation and a crackdown on terror infrastructure across the border.
As national outrage simmers and investigations continue, the Congress party’s stand adds political weight to the call for justice and accountability. The coming days will likely see increased pressure on the government to respond firmly, both within diplomatic circles and in domestic policy, as the country grapples with yet another tragedy rooted in terror.
