CWC Demands Accountability After Pahalgam Terror Attack And A Probe Into Security Failures, Calls For Unity, And Pledges Support For Grieving Families.
In a strongly worded statement, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has unequivocally condemned the brutal terrorist attack that shook Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. The cowardly assault claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists and left more than 20 others grievously injured. Describing the incident as a “barbaric act of terrorism,” the CWC expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, reaffirming its solidarity with those affected by the tragic event.
“The attack, orchestrated by elements supported by Pakistan, is a direct assault on the core values and ideals of the Indian Republic. The deliberate targeting of Hindu tourists indicates a sinister attempt to provoke communal disharmony across the country.”

In a press release issued after a high-level meeting on Thursday, the CWC stated, “The attack, orchestrated by elements supported by Pakistan, is a direct assault on the core values and ideals of the Indian Republic. The deliberate targeting of Hindu tourists indicates a sinister attempt to provoke communal disharmony across the country.” The Committee emphasized that such acts of violence are not merely attacks on individuals but are aimed at undermining the unity and fabric of Indian society.
Asserting its unwavering commitment to the fight against terrorism, the CWC reiterated the need for a decisive and resolute approach to cross-border terrorism. It called on all sections of society to remain calm, maintain peace, and stand united in the face of such threats. “Terrorism must never succeed in dividing us,” the Committee declared, urging citizens to reject divisive narratives and reaffirm their faith in the values of harmony and coexistence.

The CWC also paid rich tribute to the courage and selflessness displayed by local tourist guides and horsemen during the attack. One such local hero lost his life while attempting to shield the tourists from harm. “His sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His actions exemplify the true spirit of India,” the Committee noted.
In an effort to demonstrate national solidarity and collective resolve, the Indian National Congress has proposed an all-party meeting chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Scheduled for April 23, the meeting aims to unite all political stakeholders in addressing the growing challenges posed by terrorism and formulating a comprehensive strategy to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The Committee has also raised serious concerns regarding the evident security lapses and intelligence failures that led to the deadly incident in Pahalgam—a region considered to be under heavy security cover, particularly due to its significance in the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. The CWC has called for a transparent and thorough investigation to identify the gaps in the security apparatus and hold accountable those responsible for the breach.
With the annual Amarnath pilgrimage approaching, the CWC underscored the urgent need for enhanced and proactive security measures. It emphasized that the safety of pilgrims must be ensured through a coordinated and transparent security framework. Additionally, the Congress highlighted the critical importance of sustaining the livelihoods of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, many of whom depend heavily on tourism for their income.
While there has been widespread national outrage and condemnation of the attack from across the political spectrum, the CWC also took the opportunity to criticize the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Committee accused the ruling party of using both official and unofficial social media channels to spread divisive rhetoric and deepen polarization during a time that demands unity above all.

“The fight against terrorism is not just a matter of security, but also a test of our collective character as a nation,” the Committee remarked. “Let us not allow hatred to weaken us. Let us stand together—as one people, one nation.”
In conclusion, the CWC called for a concerted national effort to uphold the ideals of peace, solidarity, and resilience in the face of terrorism. It urged all political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to join hands in reaffirming India’s commitment to justice, unity, and peace.
