
State-Level Seminar Highlights Laws, Policies, and Animal Welfare Efforts

A state-level Seminar cum Sensitization Programme on Animal Welfare Acts, Laws, and Policies was held at Pragna Bhawan, emphasizing the importance of strengthening animal welfare initiatives. The event, organized by the Tripura Veterinary Doctors Association in collaboration with the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), gathered policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss key challenges and solutions for animal protection.
State Proposes Dairy Projects and Animal Shelters
During the seminar, Minister for Animal Resources Development, Sudhangshu Das, announced that a proposal had been submitted to the central government for setting up dairy projects in all districts to boost milk production. Additionally, he revealed plans to establish eight cow shelters across the state to accommodate cattle rescued from illegal smuggling operations.
Honoring Animal Welfare Contributions
The Gomati Animal Welfare Society received recognition for its significant efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. A posthumous honor was also awarded to Kailashahar’s Assistant Director of ARDD, Tapan Roy, for his dedicated service, with Rahul Dhar Purkayastha accepting the award on his behalf.
Several officials were acknowledged for their contributions during last year’s devastating floods, including Dr. Subir Das, Deputy Director of South District, Dr. Billo Debbarma, Deputy Director of Gomati District, and Dr. Amal Majumdar, Deputy Director of Sepahijala District, along with their teams. Minister Das presented certificates and mementos to the awardees in appreciation of their service.
Emphasizing Legal Framework and Public Responsibility
Minister Das stressed the significance of compassion and responsibility towards animals. He highlighted the state’s free vaccination program for livestock and reaffirmed the efficiency of the Tripura Animal Welfare Board. He also referenced the Animal Welfare Board of India, established in 1964, which plays a key role in preventing cruelty and enforcing laws.
Deepak Majumdar, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and MLA, commended ARDD’s efforts and emphasized that public participation is crucial for animal protection. Tripura’s Secretary for Animal Resources Development, Deepa D. Nair, urged citizens to actively engage in safeguarding animal rights.
Expert Discussions on Animal Protection Laws
The seminar featured technical sessions where experts shared insights on animal welfare regulations and policies. Speakers included Dr. Arunashish Goswami, Professor at West Bengal Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education Department, Jayakrishnan V.K., District Forest Officer of West Tripura, and Dr. Biswajit Das, Legal Officer of ARDD. A video presentation showcased Tripura’s animal welfare initiatives and development projects.
