Dambur project water released after 40 years, all precautions taken for down stream people

In the face of heavy down pour the authorities have released water from the Dambur Hydroelectric Project Dam . The District Magistrate earlier issued a notice and all precautions were taken as the Dambur water release might threaten a large tracts of land further. The DM Gomati in his social media handle said , “ “It has been reported that, the water level in the Gomati river may rise more than the present level. Water from Dumbur Hydroelectric Project Dam has to be released as water has accumulated to the critical level giving no scope to TPGL but to release some water. Requesting all citizens concerned and downstream Districts of the state to take precautionary measures immediately.”
It is after 1983 that the water from Dambur project had to be released.
Reports reaching here said although with the announcement a sense of fear gripped the villages at down stream , the authorities took all precautions and residents from vulnerable areas were evacuated . All the rescue agencies including NDRF or TSR were put on high alert and battle ready position.
In the meantime, there seemed no respite from the flood situation as the India Meteorological Department (IMD issued a red alert for South Tripura district and orange alert for rest of the seven districts in Tripura, estimating the possibility of heavy rainfall for three days.
The Press Release issued on behalf of the Meteorological Centre, Agartala read, “The low-pressure area over Central parts of Bangladesh & neighbourhood persists over the same region at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 20th August 2024. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. It is likely to move north- north westwards across West Bengal during next 48-hours. And the Monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Orai, Churk, Malda to the centre of low-pressure area over Central parts of Bangladesh & neighbourhood”
“Under the influence of the above systems isolated Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall is very likely to continue over Tripura for next three days”, it added.
Notably, the showers have already hit the state from August 19 onwards and recorded a total of 698.7 mm in the Sonamura district, 1226.6 mm in West Tripura district, 456.8 mm in the Khowai district, 1072.9 mm in the Gomati district, 1339.2 mm in South Tripura district, 757.5 mm in North Tripura, 607 mm in Unakoti district and 927.3 mm in Dhalai district in the past 24 hours.
While South Tripura district recorded the highest amount of rainfall, Khowai district recorded the lowest as of 0830 hrs IST of August 20.
