Agartala–Silchar Express begins halting at Mungiakami, ending years of demand. The new railway stoppage boosts connectivity, eases daily travel, and promises inclusive development, improved access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in Tripura.

Ending years of sustained public demand, the Agartala–Silchar Express (Train No. 15663/15664) has officially begun halting at Mungiakami Railway Station from Saturday, marking a significant milestone in Tripura’s railway connectivity and regional development. The long-awaited stoppage is being widely welcomed by local residents, commuters, and public representatives as a transformative step for the interior areas of the state.

The inauguration ceremony at Mungiakami Railway Station was led by State Tribal Affairs Minister Bikash Debbarma, who described the new halt as more than just an addition to the railway timetable. Addressing the gathering, Debbarma said that railway infrastructure plays a critical role in shaping social and economic progress. “Railway overbridges and halts are not merely structures; they are lifelines for the people. This stoppage reflects our commitment to public convenience, stronger communication networks, and inclusive growth,” he stated.

The minister revealed that the demand for a halt at Mungiakami had been pending for several years and was consistently raised by local communities. He said he personally took up the matter with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressing gratitude for the Centre’s prompt approval in the larger interest of passengers. According to Debbarma, the decision will bring immediate relief to daily commuters from Mungiakami and nearby areas who previously had to travel long distances to access major train services.

With the Agartala–Silchar Express now stopping at Mungiakami, residents are expected to gain improved access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, markets, and employment opportunities across Tripura and neighbouring states. Community leaders believe this connectivity will also reduce travel costs and time, particularly for students, patients, and small traders.

The event was attended by several dignitaries and senior officials, including Member of Parliament Kriti Singh, who joined in celebrating the fulfillment of a long-standing public aspiration. Local representatives highlighted that the halt would strengthen people-to-people connectivity and accelerate socio-economic activities in the region.

Earlier in the day, local residents organised a thanksgiving rally to express their appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The rally acknowledged not only the approval of the train stoppage but also proposed plans to modernise Mungiakami Railway Station, which are expected to further improve passenger amenities and safety.

Officials and community leaders are optimistic that the new halt will act as a catalyst for regional growth, integrating Mungiakami more closely with Tripura’s expanding railway network. The development is seen as a step toward balanced infrastructure expansion, ensuring that remote and tribal-dominated areas are not left behind in the state’s progress narrative. As trains begin regular stops, Mungiakami stands poised to emerge as an important transit point, reinforcing Tripura’s connectivity with the wider Northeast.
