State Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury chairs a high-level meeting in Jirania to resolve hurdles in railway overbridge projects, stressing road safety, smooth rail movement, inter-departmental coordination, and timely execution for improved connectivity and infrastructure development.
State Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday chaired a crucial high-level meeting in Jirania to review and resolve challenges related to the construction of proposed railway overbridges in the subdivision. Emphasising the importance of modern transport infrastructure, the minister said railway overbridges play a vital role in making daily life safer, smoother, and more efficient for citizens.
The meeting was held at the conference hall of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office and focused on addressing long-pending technical and administrative hurdles affecting several proposed railway overbridge projects. These projects cover multiple railway crossings within Jirania subdivision, including key locations under the Majlishpur assembly constituency. The minister underlined that delays in such projects directly impact public safety, traffic flow, and economic activity in the region.
Addressing the gathering, Chowdhury highlighted that railway overbridges are essential to ensure uninterrupted train operations while allowing pedestrians and vehicles to cross railway tracks safely. He noted that unmanned and congested railway crossings pose serious risks, often leading to accidents, traffic jams, and disruptions to both rail and road transport. Overbridges, he said, are a long-term solution that balances safety with mobility.
Senior officials from the Transport Department, the Public Works Department (Roads and Buildings as well as National Highways), and the Northeast Frontier Railway participated in the meeting. Local elected representatives and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate were also present. Detailed discussions were held on land acquisition issues, technical clearances, design coordination, and inter-departmental responsibilities that have slowed progress on the projects.
The minister reiterated the state government’s firm commitment to completing these overbridges at the earliest possible time. He stressed that such infrastructure projects should not be viewed merely as construction works but as lifelines that support daily commuting, trade, education, healthcare access, and overall regional development. According to him, improved connectivity will significantly reduce travel time and enhance road safety across Jirania.
Chowdhury directed all concerned departments to strengthen coordination and maintain regular communication to prevent procedural delays. He instructed officials to adopt a problem-solving approach and ensure that pending issues are resolved in a time-bound manner. The minister also emphasised accountability, urging departments to adhere strictly to project timelines once approvals are granted.

Officials present at the meeting assured the minister that efforts are underway to streamline processes and accelerate implementation. They acknowledged the importance of railway overbridges in managing increasing traffic volumes and supporting future growth in the subdivision.
The proposed overbridges are expected to bring major relief to commuters, especially during peak hours, and improve overall traffic management. Once completed, they will enhance safety standards, reduce accident risks at railway crossings, and contribute to sustainable infrastructure development in Jirania and surrounding areas.
