Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approves Agartala–Silchar Express halt at Mungiakami, boosting Tripura railway connectivity, easing travel for remote communities, and reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure development in northeastern India.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved a scheduled halt of the Agartala–Silchar Express at Mungiakami railway station. The decision fulfills a long-pending demand of residents from Mungiakami and nearby areas, who have long sought better rail access to major destinations.
The announcement has been widely welcomed across the region, particularly by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, who expressed deep appreciation to the Union Railway Minister for responding positively to the concerns raised by local communities. According to Debbarma, the halt will play a transformative role in improving the daily travel experience of people living in remote and hilly areas of Tripura.
Speaking on the development, Debbarma stated that the new stoppage will significantly reduce travel hardships faced by students, government employees, patients, and traders who depend on rail transport for long-distance journeys. He highlighted that earlier, residents had to travel considerable distances to access major railway stations, often facing safety risks and added expenses.
“This long-awaited decision brings immense relief and happiness to the people of Mungiakami and surrounding villages. It ensures safer, faster, and more convenient travel, especially for those from remote tribal regions,” the minister said.
The Agartala–Silchar Express is considered a crucial train service connecting Tripura with Assam and other northeastern states. With the addition of Mungiakami as a stoppage, connectivity within the state is expected to improve substantially, helping integrate interior regions with major economic and administrative hubs.
Railway officials have indicated that this move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen rail infrastructure in the northeastern states. Authorities are also exploring plans to modernize Mungiakami railway station by improving passenger amenities, platform facilities, safety measures, and accessibility for elderly and differently-abled travelers.
Local residents and community leaders have described the decision as a milestone in regional development. Many believe improved railway access will boost education, healthcare access, tourism, and small-scale trade, contributing to overall socio-economic growth.

Minister Debbarma further emphasized that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development. “This is not just about a train stoppage. It represents the vision of ensuring that development reaches every corner, including the most remote communities,” he said.
With the new halt approved, expectations are high that continued investments in railway infrastructure will further accelerate Tripura’s progress and strengthen its connectivity with the rest of the country.
