NABARD is strengthening rural infrastructure in Tripura through RIDF investments, supporting roads, bridges and irrigation. With ₹6,266.58 crore sanctioned and 87,485 hectares of irrigation potential created, the initiative aims to improve connectivity, agricultural productivity and rural economic resilience across the state.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is giving fresh impetus to rural infrastructure development in Tripura through sustained investments under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The initiative is focusing on strengthening roads, bridges and irrigation facilities, with the broader objective of improving agricultural productivity, rural connectivity and access to essential services across the state.
Under the leadership of Tanushri Bhattacharjee, General Manager of NABARD’s Tripura Regional Office, greater attention is being given to infrastructure that can support the long-term development of rural communities. Improved infrastructure is expected to create better links between villages, agricultural production centres, markets and public services while helping strengthen the economic foundations of rural areas.
According to available data, NABARD has extended cumulative loans of ₹6,266.58 crore to Tripura under RIDF, while ₹4,829.25 crore has already been disbursed. The financial support has been utilised for a broad range of rural infrastructure projects, contributing to the expansion and improvement of the state’s development network.
Irrigation remains one of the major areas supported through RIDF interventions. Projects funded under the programme have created a cumulative irrigation potential of 87,485 hectares in Tripura. The expansion of irrigation infrastructure is particularly important for the state, where a significant section of the rural economy remains dependent on agriculture.
Greater availability of irrigation can help farmers reduce their dependence on rainfall and provide opportunities for crop diversification. It can also encourage farmers to adopt higher-value agricultural activities while improving the resilience of farming communities in the face of changing climatic conditions.
Rural road connectivity has also received substantial support. Around 3,862 kilometres of rural roads have been constructed under RIDF, along with 26 kilometres of rural bridges. These infrastructure projects are helping connect remote villages with major roads, markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and administrative centres.
Better connectivity can have a direct impact on rural economic activity. Farmers can gain easier access to markets, while students and residents can benefit from improved access to educational and healthcare facilities. Improved road networks can also facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and essential goods, potentially reducing transportation difficulties faced by rural communities.
At the same time, the next phase of infrastructure development will require a strong focus on maintenance, quality control and long-term asset management. Tripura experiences heavy monsoon conditions, making climate-resilient roads and bridges particularly important. Effective maintenance mechanisms will be essential to protect public investment and ensure that infrastructure continues to serve communities over the long term.
The coordinated participation of state government departments will also remain crucial for the successful implementation of RIDF-supported projects. The Finance Department, acting as the Nodal Department, has played an important role in facilitating the implementation process. Continued coordination between NABARD and the state government can help improve project selection, fund utilisation, monitoring and timely completion.
Going forward, rural infrastructure investment could be linked more closely with agricultural value addition, storage facilities, post-harvest infrastructure, irrigation and small rural enterprises. Such an integrated approach could generate a stronger multiplier effect by connecting infrastructure development with employment, agricultural income and local economic activity.

With continued support from NABARD’s Tripura Regional Office under Tanushri Bhattacharjee’s leadership and cooperation from the state government, RIDF-backed investments can play an important role in building a more connected, resilient and productive rural economy. The focus on infrastructure development therefore extends beyond physical assets, with the potential to strengthen the overall social and economic foundations of rural Tripura.
