Agartala Press Club AGM reviews annual activities, honours late members, and stresses journalist safety. Leaders highlight unity, non-political functioning, and improved services while addressing concerns and outlining future initiatives for strengthening media welfare in Tripura.
A focused discussion on institutional progress and journalist welfare marked the Annual General Meeting of the Agartala Press Club, held on Sunday in Agartala. Members gathered to review the club’s activities over the past year while raising important concerns about safety, unity, and professional standards within the media community.
The meeting began on a solemn note, as members paid heartfelt tributes to two departed colleagues, Tapan Chakraborty and Nandan Chakraborty. Their contributions to journalism and association with the club were remembered with respect and gratitude.
The presidium for the session included club president Pranab Sarkar, vice-president Chitra Roy, along with senior journalists Srotaranjan Khisa and Sanjib Deb. Prominent figures such as senior editor Samir Pal and noted poet-writer Bimalendu Chakraborty were also present on the stage.
At approximately 11:30 am, secretary Ramakanta Dey presented the annual report along with the audited statement of accounts. The report highlighted key initiatives undertaken by the club over the past year, including efforts to strengthen professional networking and support mechanisms for journalists. Members actively participated in the discussion that followed, offering constructive feedback and suggestions.
Several members, including Samir Pal, Chitra Roy, Sanjib Deb, Monimoy Roy, Krishnapada Karmakar, Debasish Majumdar, Suprabhat Debnath, Samrat Chowdhury, Chandrima Sircar, Meghadhan Deb, and associate member Bimalendu Chakraborty, shared their views during the deliberations. Participants broadly appreciated the club’s organisational efficiency and the initiatives taken in the interest of the journalistic community. Improvements in the quality of canteen services were also acknowledged as a positive development.
However, a key concern that emerged during the meeting was the need for enhanced safety and security measures for journalists. Speakers stressed the importance of vigilance in ensuring a safe working environment, particularly in the context of evolving challenges faced by media professionals. The emphasis on safety underscored the collective commitment of the members to protect the rights and well-being of journalists.
Members also noted that the club has maintained a non-political stance while fostering unity and collaboration among journalists from diverse backgrounds. This approach, they observed, has strengthened the institution’s credibility and inclusiveness.
