Tripura Minister Tinku Roy speaks to Pradyot Debbarman to curb post-poll violence, ensure safety of BJP workers, and restore peace before Garia Puja amid rising political tensions and displacement across multiple regions in the state.

Tensions following recent local elections in Tripura have prompted fresh political outreach, with efforts underway to curb violence and restore normalcy across affected regions. Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy confirmed on Sunday that he had spoken directly with Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, the head of Tipra Motha Party, to address incidents of post-poll unrest and ensure the safe return of displaced party workers.

Speaking to media representatives at Krishnapur, Roy emphasized that electoral victories should not be interpreted as a justification for violence. He noted that since 2018, the Bharatiya Janata Party has won multiple elections in the state without allowing widespread political clashes to escalate. “Winning an election does not grant anyone the license to engage in violence, arson, or attacks on opposition supporters,” Roy said, underlining the need for restraint across party lines.

The minister revealed that his conversation with Debbarman focused on reducing tensions and restoring a sense of security among affected communities. According to Roy, the timing of the unrest has compounded distress, as displaced families remain unable to celebrate the upcoming Garia Puja on April 21. “At a time when people should be participating in cultural and religious festivities, many have been forced into temporary shelters, either rendered homeless or too fearful to return,” he added.

Roy further stated that the state administration has intensified efforts to bring the situation under control, facilitate the return of displaced individuals, and ensure that law and order is maintained. He urged all political stakeholders to cooperate with authorities in restoring peace and preventing further escalation.

Accompanied by BJP state General Secretary Bipin Debbarma and Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, Roy visited several locations within the Krishnapur constituency. During the visits, the leaders interacted with victims of the violence, offering assurances of support and immediate assistance. In one instance, approximately 25 BJP workers were reported to have taken shelter in a government guest house after their homes were allegedly targeted. Additionally, the local BJP office was vandalized, with furniture set on fire during the unrest.

Roy acknowledged that the incidents were not isolated to Krishnapur, stating that reports of post-poll violence have emerged from multiple parts of the state. He expressed hope that peace and stability would soon return to all affected areas.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), have also accused the BJP of involvement in post-election violence. These allegations highlight the broader political tensions that continue to shape the state’s post-election environment.

Authorities are expected to maintain close monitoring of the situation in the coming days, particularly as the festive season approaches, with renewed appeals for calm and cooperation across political divides.
