Tripura is witnessing a major shift toward natural and organic farming as the state expands sustainable agriculture initiatives. Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath launched the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” in Dharmanagar, highlighting efforts to protect farmland, improve soil health, reduce chemical dependence, and strengthen farmers’ livelihoods for future generations.
Tripura’s agricultural sector is undergoing a significant transformation as increasing numbers of farmers move away from chemical-intensive cultivation and adopt natural and organic farming practices. The transition was highlighted during the district-level “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” (Save Farmland Campaign) and Natural Farming Workshop inaugurated by Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath at Ragna Higher Secondary School in Dharmanagar.
Addressing farmers, agricultural experts, and local representatives, Minister Nath emphasized that every green paddy stalk symbolizes hope for the future and that protecting agricultural land has become a responsibility toward the next generation. He stated that the promotion of natural farming is no longer just a government programme but a commitment to ensuring healthy soil, safe food, and sustainable livelihoods for farmers.
The campaign is part of a nationwide initiative being conducted throughout June to raise awareness about the harmful effects of excessive chemical use in agriculture. Over the years, continuous application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has contributed to declining soil fertility, environmental degradation, and rising cultivation costs. Through the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan,” the government aims to encourage farmers to adopt eco-friendly alternatives that restore soil health while maintaining productivity.
Minister Nath noted that before 2018, natural farming practices were almost non-existent in Tripura. However, sustained government efforts have led to remarkable progress. According to official figures, more than 5,000 hectares of land in the state are currently under natural farming, with a target of expanding the coverage to 16,000 hectares by the end of the year. Organic farming has also recorded substantial growth, increasing from nearly 2,000 hectares to more than 26,000 hectares.

Highlighting the benefits of sustainable agriculture, Nath challenged the common perception that chemical inputs are essential for higher yields. He stated that natural farming can achieve productive results while significantly reducing input costs and improving long-term soil fertility. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through training programmes, awareness campaigns, field exposure visits, and various incentives aimed at accelerating the adoption of natural farming techniques.
The initiative is being implemented beyond the farming community. Public representatives, local leaders, and landowners are being encouraged to adopt natural farming practices and motivate others to participate. Awareness meetings and workshops are being organized at Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti, and Zilla Parishad levels to expand outreach across rural areas.
Scientists and experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) are also playing an active role in guiding farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, soil conservation, and organic cultivation methods. Their involvement is expected to help farmers overcome challenges associated with the transition from chemical-based farming systems.
Minister Nath linked the campaign to India’s broader vision of sustainable development and economic growth. He stressed that a strong agricultural sector is essential for achieving the country’s long-term development goals and realizing the vision of making India a leading global nation by 2047.

For Tripura’s farmers, the transition from chemicals to organics represents more than a policy initiative. It reflects a growing commitment to preserving farmland, restoring soil vitality, producing chemical-free food, and building a resilient agricultural future. As natural and organic farming continue to expand across the state, the campaign is expected to play a crucial role in creating a greener, healthier, and more prosperous rural economy.
