Vinesh Phogat vowed to continue fighting after the Wrestling Federation of India issued a show-cause notice accusing her of indiscipline and anti-doping violations, delaying her wrestling comeback and intensifying the latest controversy surrounding Indian wrestling.

Fresh controversy has erupted in Indian wrestling after star athlete Vinesh Phogat signalled her determination to continue fighting despite receiving a detailed show-cause notice from the Wrestling Federation of India. The federation accused the celebrated wrestler of indiscipline and violations linked to anti-doping regulations, while also declaring her temporarily ineligible to participate in domestic tournaments until June 26.

The development has delayed Vinesh’s anticipated return to competitive wrestling, which many fans had been eagerly awaiting following her break from the sport after the heartbreaking events of the 2024 Summer Olympics. The wrestler had been preparing for a comeback at the National Open Ranking tournament in Gonda, scheduled to begin on Sunday, but the latest decision from the federation has put those plans on hold.

Soon after the notice became public, Vinesh posted a strongly worded message on social media, making it clear that she was not prepared to step back from the battle. Without directly addressing the federation’s allegations, her statement reflected resilience and determination during what has become another difficult phase in her career.

According to the 15-page notice issued by the WFI, the federation alleged that Vinesh failed to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required for wrestlers returning from retirement under the anti-doping and eligibility rules of United World Wrestling. The federation claimed that the wrestler’s return did not comply with international regulations and therefore affected her eligibility for domestic competition.

The notice also referred to the controversy surrounding the Paris Olympics, where Vinesh faced a devastating disqualification that shocked Indian sports fans and triggered intense debate across the country. The WFI alleged that her conduct during that period caused “lasting damage” to the reputation of Indian wrestling. It further accused her of violating provisions under the federation’s constitution, international wrestling rules, and anti-doping guidelines.

The latest confrontation adds another dramatic chapter to the ongoing turbulence within Indian wrestling. Over the past few years, the sport has repeatedly found itself in the spotlight because of administrative disputes, protests, disciplinary controversies, and tensions between athletes and officials. Vinesh herself has remained one of the most influential and outspoken figures in Indian wrestling, often attracting both support and criticism for her public stand on several issues affecting the sport.

Despite the setback, sources close to the wrestler believe she is unlikely to withdraw quietly and may challenge the federation’s decision through official channels. Her supporters have already begun expressing solidarity on social media, arguing that one of India’s most decorated wrestlers deserves a fair opportunity to return to competition.
