Suvendu Adhikari takes oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal alongside five ministers, marking a historic political shift with representation from multiple caste and community backgrounds across the state government.

A major political transformation unfolded in West Bengal on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first Chief Minister of a BJP-led government in the state, marking a historic moment in Bengal’s political landscape. Along with Adhikari, five other ministers were also sworn into the state Council of Ministers during the oath-taking ceremony.

The newly inducted ministers include former BJP national vice-president and former West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh, fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul, former Union Minister of State for Home Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania, and Khudiram Tudu. The swearing-in ceremony reflected the BJP’s effort to establish a broad-based and socially inclusive leadership structure in the state.

Dilip Ghosh was the second leader to take oath after Adhikari, followed by Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik. However, official announcements regarding the allocation of ministerial portfolios were yet to be made at the time of filing this report.

Political analysts believe the composition of the first BJP cabinet in West Bengal carries strong symbolic significance. The selection of ministers from various caste and community backgrounds appears to underline the party’s strategy of social inclusiveness and balanced representation.

Ashok Kirtania is known to represent the influential Matua community, while Khudiram Tudu is regarded as a prominent tribal face in the state. In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the BJP performed strongly in constituencies where Matua and tribal voters form a substantial portion of the electorate.

Dilip Ghosh is considered a representative of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, while Agnimitra Paul comes from a Kayastha background. Nisith Pramanik represents the Rajbanshi community, which has considerable influence across North Bengal. The BJP registered remarkable electoral success in North Bengal during the Assembly polls, significantly weakening the Trinamool Congress in several constituencies across the region.

Suvendu Adhikari himself belongs to a Brahmin family and has emerged as one of the most influential political figures in Bengal politics in recent years. His elevation as Chief Minister is being viewed by BJP supporters as a strategic decision aimed at consolidating support across different social groups.

During the election campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was repeatedly asked about the party’s chief ministerial face in Bengal. Rather than naming a specific individual, Shah consistently stated that the BJP’s Chief Minister candidate would be “a son of the soil, a Bengali, and someone educated in Bengali medium.” Political observers note that Adhikari fits all the criteria outlined by the BJP leadership before the elections.

The formation of the BJP government in West Bengal marks a historic political shift in a state long dominated by regional political forces. The new administration is expected to face significant challenges as it begins governance in one of India’s most politically sensitive and strategically important states.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress, which now occupies the role of the principal Opposition party in the Assembly, has not yet announced the name of its Leader of the Opposition. Notably, the post was held by Suvendu Adhikari himself from 2021 until 2026 before his elevation as Chief Minister.

The political developments are expected to reshape Bengal’s governance and electoral dynamics in the coming years as the BJP seeks to strengthen its administrative and grassroots presence across the state.
