The 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated with immense enthusiasm and cultural fervour across several parts of Tripura on Saturday, as colourful programmes, musical performances, floral tributes and literary discussions drew large participation from people of all age groups.

From Teliamura to Sonamura and Udaipur, the day-long celebrations reflected the enduring admiration for the legendary poet, philosopher, composer and social reformer whose literary and humanitarian contributions continue to inspire generations across the globe.

In Teliamura subdivision, the celebrations were organised jointly by the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Information and Cultural Affairs Department, Teliamura Municipal Council and Teliamura Cultural Cell. The town witnessed a festive atmosphere from the early hours of the morning as artists from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department organised a colourful ‘prabhat pheri’ through different parts of the town, attracting enthusiastic participation from local residents.

The main programme commenced at Chitrangada Kala Kendra at around 8 am with floral tributes and garlanding of the statue of Rabindranath Tagore. The ceremonial inauguration was conducted by Khowai Zilla Parishad Saha Sabhadhipati Satyendra Chandra Das through the lighting of the traditional lamp.

Several distinguished personalities attended the programme, including Teliamura Municipal Council vice chairperson Madhusudan Roy, Teliamura Panchayat Samiti vice chairman Nirmal Sutradhar, chairman of the Sports and Culture Standing Committee Achintya Bhattacharjee, councillor Malashree Saha Pal and Khowai district cultural advisory committee member Sumit Kar. The event was presided over by Teliamura Municipal Council chairperson Rupak Sarkar.

During the programme, the dignitaries paid floral tributes to the statue of Tagore while Teliamura Sub-Divisional Information and Cultural Affairs officer Dulal Debbarma delivered the welcome speech. Folk artists from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department presented soulful renditions of Rabindra Sangeet, creating an emotional atmosphere among the audience.

Speakers at the gathering highlighted the life philosophy, literary brilliance and humanitarian ideals of Rabindranath Tagore, describing him as one of the greatest cultural icons of India. They also stressed the timeless relevance of his writings, songs and educational philosophy in contemporary society.

Adding vibrancy to the celebration, a sit-and-draw competition was organised for students from Nursery to Class VIII in five separate categories. Students from various schools across Teliamura enthusiastically participated in the event. A total of 113 young participants showcased their creativity and artistic talent through colourful drawings inspired by nature, culture and the life of Tagore.

The celebrations continued into the evening with a grand cultural programme at Chitrangada Kala Kendra attended by several dignitaries, including Satyendra Chandra Das, Rupak Sarkar, Madhusudan Roy and Achintya Bhattacharjee along with councillors of the municipal council.

Students from different educational institutions mesmerised the audience with captivating music and dance performances dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore. Renowned artist Pushpita Chakraborty from Agartala also performed Rabindra Sangeet, earning applause from the gathering.

At the conclusion of the programme, certificates and trophies were distributed among the winners of the sit-and-draw competition. Residents of Teliamura actively participated throughout the day, making the celebration one of the most vibrant cultural events in the subdivision.

Meanwhile, in Sonamura subdivision, Rabindra Jayanti was celebrated at Melaghar under the joint initiative of the Melaghar Municipal Council and the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The programme took place near the statue of Rabindranath Tagore located at the entrance of the municipal council office.

Sonamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prabir Saha and retired headmaster Haripada Das were among the notable attendees present during the event. The dignitaries paid floral tributes to the marble statue of the poet before participating in discussions on Tagore’s literary excellence, educational vision and lasting impact on society.

The cultural programme witnessed the participation of nearly 80 artists from different parts of the subdivision. Dance performances, music, recitation and drama based on Tagore’s works added colour and emotion to the celebration. Six noted painters also participated in a live painting session beside the main stage, drawing appreciation from spectators.

As part of the annual observance, floral tributes were also paid at Rabindra Chowmuhani in Sonamura town. During the event, local residents once again raised concerns regarding shops operating beneath the poet’s statue. They appealed to the civic administration to relocate the shopkeepers to another suitable place in order to preserve the dignity and aesthetic value of the memorial site.

In Udaipur subdivision, a colourful and emotionally charged programme was organised near Matabari bypass under the supervision of the Gomati District Information and Cultural Affairs Department, Gomati Zilla Parishad and Matabari RD Block.

The programme began with floral tributes to the marble statue of Rabindranath Tagore followed by a series of cultural performances featuring Rabindra Sangeet, dance and recitation.

Prominent dignitaries present at the programme included Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Debal Debroy, MLA Abhishek Debroy, Saha Sabhadhipati Sujan Kumar Sen, Matabari Panchayat Samiti chairperson Shilpi Das and Information and Cultural Affairs Department official Tinku Biswas.

Addressing the gathering, speakers described Rabindranath Tagore not merely as a poet but as an eternal philosophy whose literary works reflected love, resistance, humanity, nature and social transformation. They also emphasised the continued relevance of Tagore’s teachings in the digital era, stating that his thoughts remain a guiding force for humanity, creativity and truth even during the age of artificial intelligence.

The evening cultural programme created a deeply emotional environment as the venue echoed with Rabindra Sangeet and poetic recitations. The performances highlighted the profound emotional connection that Bengalis continue to share with the Nobel laureate whose legacy remains alive in literature, music, art and social thought.

The statewide celebrations once again demonstrated that Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless message of humanity, harmony and cultural richness continues to resonate strongly among people across Tripura, transcending generations and inspiring society through art and intellect.
