Raj Rajeshwari Temple in Muhuripur, South Tripura

A proposal submitted by Lok Sabha MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb seeking infrastructure development at three historic temples in South Tripura has received a positive response from the Union government. The Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism has acknowledged the request and initiated steps to examine the proposal, raising hopes for improved facilities for pilgrims and a boost to cultural tourism in the region.

In an official communication dated March 2, 2026, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed that he had received Deb’s proposal regarding the development of infrastructure at three important temples in South Tripura district—Jogamaya Kalibari in Belonia, Raj Rajeshwari Kalibari in Muhuripur, and Daityeshwari Kalibari in Sabroom. According to the minister’s letter, the proposal has been forwarded to the concerned department for further action in accordance with existing government norms and procedures.

The communication from the ministry marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing demands from local residents and devotees who have sought better infrastructure at these temples. These sites are not only important places of worship but also carry deep cultural and historical significance for people across the region.

Reacting to the development, Deb expressed gratitude to the Union minister and the central government for taking the proposal seriously and moving the process forward. He said the initiative would help improve facilities for thousands of devotees who visit these temples throughout the year while also contributing to the preservation of Tripura’s rich religious heritage.

“I sincerely thank Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for initiating the process of infrastructure development at Jogamaya Kalibari, Raj Rajeshwari Kalibari, and Daityeshwari Kalibari,” Deb said in a statement. “This step will not only benefit devotees but will also strengthen Tripura’s cultural and spiritual heritage.”

The three temples mentioned in the proposal are widely regarded as prominent religious landmarks in South Tripura. Jogamaya Kalibari, located in Belonia, attracts devotees from nearby towns and villages, especially during major religious festivals. Raj Rajeshwari Kalibari in Muhuripur is another important spiritual site known for its traditional rituals and gatherings of worshippers. Meanwhile, Daityeshwari Kalibari in Sabroom holds historical and cultural importance for local communities and pilgrims visiting the southern part of the state.

Over the years, devotees and community leaders have raised concerns about the lack of adequate infrastructure at these temples, including limited facilities for pilgrims, insufficient approach roads, and the need for improved maintenance and visitor amenities. Development initiatives under central or state-supported schemes are expected to address these gaps by providing better infrastructure, improved accessibility, and enhanced visitor facilities.

Officials familiar with the proposal said the development plan could include improvements such as better pathways, lighting, sanitation facilities, and other basic infrastructure aimed at ensuring a comfortable and safe experience for devotees. Enhancing these facilities may also help promote religious tourism in South Tripura, potentially drawing more visitors from neighbouring districts and states.

Local residents and temple authorities have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive move that could bring long-term benefits to the region. Many believe that improved infrastructure at these religious sites will not only serve spiritual needs but also create opportunities for small businesses, vendors, and tourism-related activities in nearby areas.

Community members say the temples have long served as important cultural and social gathering points, especially during festivals and religious events. With better infrastructure and government support, these sites could gain wider recognition and attract a larger number of pilgrims and tourists.

Observers also note that promoting and preserving heritage temples aligns with broader efforts by the central government to strengthen cultural tourism across the country. If the proposal progresses through the necessary administrative stages, it could lead to tangible improvements at the three temples in the near future.

For South Tripura, the initiative represents more than just infrastructure development. Residents see it as an opportunity to protect their religious heritage while opening the door for greater cultural visibility and economic activity linked to tourism and pilgrimage.

As the concerned departments review the proposal and move forward with necessary procedures, devotees and local communities remain hopeful that the long-a
