Ahead of VC polls, tension rises in Tripura after BJP Khumulwng office was vandalised and 14-15 vehicles were damaged, reviving memories of violence during TTAADC elections. BJP leaders alleged Tipra Motha supporters were behind the attack, while the identities of the assailants remain unconfirmed and an FIR is being planned.
Tension has resurfaced in Tripura’s TTAADC areas ahead of the forthcoming Village Committee (VC) elections after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s office in Khumulwng was allegedly attacked and vandalised on Saturday, with around 14-15 two-wheelers and cars reportedly damaged in the incident.
According to BJP leaders, a group of assailants entered the party office premises while party workers were present and allegedly vandalised several items inside the office. Vehicles, including motorcycles, scooters and cars parked in front of or on the premises of the office, were also reportedly damaged during the attack.
The sudden incident forced BJP workers present at the office to flee the spot, party leaders said. The attack has triggered tension in the Takarjala area and has brought back memories of the violence and political clashes witnessed during and after the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held earlier this year.
Nirmal Debbarma, president of the 12-Takarjala BJP Mandal, alleged that the party office and vehicles were extensively vandalised during the attack. He said party workers were left frightened by the sudden incident and expressed concern over the escalation of political tension in the area.
BJP leaders alleged that supporters of the Tipra Motha were behind the attack. However, the allegation could not be independently verified, and the identities of those involved in the incident have not yet been established.
BJP state General Secretary Bipin Debbarma said the assailants had not been identified so far and that instructions had been issued to lodge an FIR against those responsible for the incident.
Asked whether any BJP worker had suffered injuries during the attack, Debbarma said no reports of injuries had been received from the party workers handling the situation at the local level.
The incident assumes significance as relations between the BJP and Tipra Motha, two major political forces that are part of Tripura’s coalition government, have shown signs of strain following the TTAADC elections. Tipra Motha emerged as a major political force in the council polls, defeating the BJP in a result that altered the political equations in the ADC areas.
With the Village Committee elections now approaching, the latest incident could further intensify political uncertainty in the TTAADC region. The VC polls are particularly significant as they concern the single-tier rural local bodies functioning in the tribal autonomous council areas.
Attempts by the BJP and Tipra Motha to arrive at a consensus over a pre-poll alliance ahead of the VC elections have reportedly failed despite several rounds of discussions. The issue has also attracted the attention of the BJP’s central leadership, but an agreement between the two parties has so far remained elusive.
The BJP has reportedly been keen on reaching a seat-adjustment arrangement with Tipra Motha before the elections. Tipra Motha, however, has linked any such understanding to the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord signed in 2024, which the party describes as a framework for a “constitutional solution” for the indigenous people of Tripura.
Tipra Motha founder and party chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has repeatedly raised the demand for implementation of the accord. Among the broader issues associated with his demands are greater rights over land allocation in the TTAADC areas and increased financial and administrative autonomy for the district council.
In a recent social media livestream, Debbarman said implementation of the Tiprasa Accord would be the key condition for Tipra Motha to consider joining hands with the BJP for a pre-poll seat-adjustment arrangement in the Village Committee elections.
The BJP, however, has not completely ruled out the possibility of an alliance. State BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, have maintained that the possibility of an understanding between the two parties cannot be ruled out while discussions remain open.
Against this political backdrop, the attack on the BJP office has added another layer of tension ahead of the VC polls. While the identities and motives of the attackers remain subject to investigation, the vandalism has already intensified concerns among political workers about a possible return of confrontation in the TTAADC areas.

The immediate focus is now likely to remain on maintaining peace in the affected area, identifying those responsible and determining whether the incident was connected to the wider political rivalry between the BJP and Tipra Motha.
As the Village Committee elections draw closer, the latest episode has served as an uneasy reminder of the political violence that accompanied the previous ADC election cycle, making the need for a peaceful electoral environment increasingly significant.
