Nationwide bank strike disrupts banking services across India, including Tripura, as employees demand a five-day banking week. The United Forum of Bank Unions says Saturday-Sunday closures would reduce workload, improve work-life balance and enhance efficiency and customer service.
Banking services across India, including Tripura, were severely disrupted on Friday as bank employees participated in a nationwide strike demanding the introduction of a five-day banking week. The protest was organized under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents several major bank employee and officer organizations.
The central demand of the striking employees is that banks should remain closed on both Saturdays and Sundays, effectively limiting regular banking operations to five working days a week. Employee unions have maintained that the proposed change would help reduce excessive workload, improve work-life balance and create better working conditions for bank staff.
In Tripura, the strike affected banking operations in Agartala as well as several other districts. A number of bank branches remained closed as employees joined the nationwide protest. Customers visiting branches faced difficulties in accessing services, including cash deposits, withdrawals, account-related work and loan processing.
However, digital banking facilities continued to provide some relief to customers. Online banking services, ATMs and other digital platforms remained operational, allowing people to carry out several routine transactions despite the closure of physical branches.
Union representatives said that the demand for a five-day banking week has been raised repeatedly during discussions with the authorities over the years. According to employee leaders, despite prolonged discussions, no concrete resolution has been reached on the issue, prompting workers to once again resort to industrial action.
“Our demands are not new. We have repeatedly raised them, but without meaningful progress, we are left with no choice but to protest,” union representatives said.
The UFBU has emphasized that the demand is not simply aimed at reducing the number of working days. Employee organizations argue that a five-day banking week could contribute to greater efficiency and sustainability within the banking sector. They also believe that aligning banking schedules with international practices could improve employee morale and ultimately contribute to better customer service.
The nationwide strike has once again brought attention to issues surrounding employee welfare, working conditions and reforms in India’s banking sector. The disruption also highlighted the growing dependence on digital banking services as customers increasingly use online platforms and ATMs for routine financial transactions.

Bank employee unions have indicated that the agitation could be intensified if their demand for a five-day banking week is not addressed. The issue is therefore expected to remain an important point of discussion between banking organizations, employee unions and authorities as efforts continue to resolve the long-standing demand.
