Tripura government will bear 100% of the enhanced electricity tariff through subsidy, benefiting nearly 10 lakh consumers from May 2026, while excess payments will be adjusted in September, October and November.

The Tripura government has decided to bear 100 per cent of the enhanced electricity tariff approved by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) for the 2026-27 financial year, providing relief to nearly 10 lakh electricity consumers across the state.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said on Friday that the decision was taken with consumer convenience as the government’s priority and would ensure that the revised tariff does not place an additional financial burden on households and businesses. The 100 per cent subsidy on the increased tariff will be effective retrospectively from May 2026.

The subsidy will cover most categories of electricity consumers in Tripura, including domestic users, small, medium and large businesses, traders, farmers and industrial consumers. However, railway traction has been excluded from the full subsidy arrangement.

For certain categories, including defence installations, Railways, All India Radio and Doordarshan, the state government will bear 15 per cent of the increased tariff, according to the decision announced by the government.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of growing concern among consumers over the sharp increase in electricity bills following the revised tariff order. The increase, particularly in fixed charges, had triggered public criticism and political protests across Tripura in recent months.

Chief Minister Saha said the government’s decision was aimed at protecting consumers from the impact of the enhanced tariff and ensuring that people do not face financial hardship because of the revised electricity rates.

An important aspect of the decision is that consumers who have already paid their electricity bills at the enhanced tariff rates will also receive the benefit of the subsidy. The excess amount paid by such consumers will be adjusted against their subsequent electricity bills.

The adjustment will take place over three billing cycles in September, October and November. The government has said that the process will be carried out in a phased manner so that consumers who have already paid higher bills receive the benefit of the subsidy without having to make separate claims.

Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said earlier on Friday that the government would provide a total subsidy of Rs 194.70 crore during the year, including Rs 77.57 crore provided earlier. The move is expected to cover electricity consumers across different sectors and categories throughout the state.

Nath said the revised tariff order had been issued by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission, a quasi-judicial regulatory body, in accordance with regulatory requirements. He said the tariff revision had led to a significant increase in the fixed-charge component, creating concerns among households, shopkeepers, farmers and other consumers.

The Power Minister said the government had decided to absorb the entire increase for eligible consumer categories rather than pass the additional burden on to the public. He described the decision as a major step towards consumer welfare.

According to Nath, the government has also maintained that no additional tariff was imposed on consumers by the BJP-led government in Tripura between 2019 and 2023. He compared the tariff increases under different administrations and said the current government had attempted to shield consumers from rising costs.

The issue of electricity tariffs had become politically contentious in Tripura, with opposition parties, including the CPI-M and Congress, launching protests and rallies against the revised rates. Opposition parties had demanded immediate relief for consumers and criticised the government over the impact of higher electricity bills.

Consumer concerns were particularly pronounced among households, small shopkeepers, traders and farmers, who feared that higher electricity costs would increase their monthly expenses and operating costs.

The government’s decision to provide a full subsidy on the enhanced portion of the tariff is therefore expected to ease the immediate financial pressure on a large section of consumers. Those who have already received and paid bills calculated under the revised tariff will also benefit through the planned adjustments.

The subsidy decision is also significant for commercial and agricultural consumers, who could otherwise have faced higher operational expenses due to the revised electricity charges. By absorbing the increased component, the government aims to prevent the tariff revision from translating into a wider economic burden.

Officials and ministers have emphasised that the relief will be applicable from May 2026, meaning the subsidy will cover the enhanced tariff from the beginning of the new tariff regime.

With nearly 10 lakh consumers expected to benefit, the decision represents a substantial financial commitment by the Tripura government. It also seeks to address public dissatisfaction that had emerged following the tariff revision and the subsequent rise in electricity bills.

The government has assured consumers that the excess amounts already paid will not be lost and will instead be adjusted through bills issued during September, October and November.
