Two British warships have docked in Busan, South Korea, as part of the Royal Navy’s Operation Highmast, aiming to strengthen Indo-Pacific security and defense cooperation. The visit includes cultural exchanges, diplomatic talks, and plans for an HMS Prince of Wales aerial demonstration, highlighting deepening UK–South Korea strategic ties.

Two British naval vessels have arrived in South Korea as part of a broader Indo-Pacific tour aimed at bolstering maritime security and deepening defense cooperation, the British Embassy in Seoul confirmed on Tuesday.

The frigate HMS Richmond docked at the southern port city of Busan earlier in the day, while the RFA Tidespring, a logistical support ship, arrived on Monday. The Tidespring, commissioned in 2016, was built by South Korea’s renowned shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, now operating under the name Hanwha Ocean.

Operation Highmast: An Eight-Month Mission

The visit is part of the Royal Navy’s eight-month Indo-Pacific deployment, codenamed Operation Highmast. The mission focuses on enhancing maritime security, fostering regional stability, and strengthening defense partnerships with allied nations.

According to the British Embassy, the crews of both ships will engage in cultural exchanges, diplomatic activities, and joint military interactions during their two-week stay in South Korea. The port call serves as a symbolic gesture of the United Kingdom’s commitment to military interoperability and defense cooperation with Seoul.

Future Naval Activities in South Korean Waters

Looking ahead, the Royal Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the HMS Prince of Wales, is scheduled to conduct an aerial capability demonstration in South Korean waters next month. The exercise is expected to showcase advanced British naval aviation capabilities and further strengthen maritime coordination between the two nations.

Diplomatic Coordination at the Ministerial Level

The naval visit comes amid intensified diplomatic engagement between London and Seoul. On Monday, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held a phone conversation with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to discuss advancing their strategic partnership and addressing pressing global and regional security issues.

Minister Cho emphasized the significant momentum in bilateral ties since the inauguration of President Lee Jae Myung’s administration in June. He expressed hope that the United Kingdom would actively support South Korea’s new foreign policy initiatives, particularly in security, economic growth, and technological innovation.

Additionally, Cho highlighted the importance of upgrading the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and exploring greater cooperation in economic and artificial intelligence (AI) development.

Shared Security and Global Challenges

Foreign Secretary Lammy welcomed the ongoing high-level exchanges and expressed optimism for closer collaboration in key areas, including trade, defense, and climate change. Both ministers also exchanged views on security challenges on the Korean Peninsula, the conflict in Ukraine, and the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific.

The two sides agreed to arrange an early in-person meeting for in-depth discussions aimed at further strengthening their partnership.

Significance of the Visit

Defense analysts note that the Royal Navy’s deployment reflects London’s strategic shift toward a more active role in the Indo-Pacific. The region has become a focal point for global security dynamics, with growing maritime tensions and strategic competition among major powers.

By conducting joint operations, port visits, and capability demonstrations, the UK aims to reinforce its position as a reliable security partner and contribute to safeguarding critical sea lanes in the region.

The British Embassy underscored that these activities reaffirm the shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and a rules-based international order between the UK and South Korea.
