One year after the RG Kar junior doctor’s rape and murder, her father alleges harassment while filing a complaint over an attack on his wife during “Nabanna Avijan.” Frustrated with police redirection, he met Kolkata Police Commissioner seeking a zero FIR. Investigation into the alleged assault is underway.

A year after the brutal rape and murder of his daughter, the father of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital victim has once again found himself knocking on the doors of Kolkata Police—this time seeking justice for his wife. The victim’s father met Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma on Tuesday, alleging harassment while attempting to lodge a complaint over an alleged police attack on his wife during Saturday’s “Nabanna Avijan” (March to the State Secretariat).

According to the father, despite repeated attempts, he was not given proper assistance by the local police station. On Monday night, he sent a formal complaint via email to the Shakespeare Sarani police station. However, the following day, he was informed that the matter must be reported to the Park Street police station. Later, he received another response directing him to approach the New Market police station.

Frustrated with being redirected repeatedly, he decided to send his complaint directly to the Police Commissioner via email, requesting that a zero FIR be registered and forwarded to the appropriate jurisdiction.

“I am really sad and shocked that nothing has changed even after a year. Last year on August 9, my only daughter was brutally murdered. This year on August 9, my wife was attacked. She is suffering from severe headaches and cannot stand. Despite everything we have gone through, the Kolkata Police is misleading us. I request you, please register a zero FIR and forward it to the right police station,” he wrote in his complaint.

Clash on the First Death Anniversary

The incident in question occurred on August 9, when a massive protest took place on the first anniversary of the RG Kar victim’s death. The protest, organised as part of the BJP-led “Nabanna Avijan,” saw heavy police deployment. Tensions flared when protesters, including the victim’s parents, attempted to march towards Nabanna, resulting in a scuffle between the demonstrators and police personnel.

During the clash, the victim’s mother alleged that she was beaten by policemen, leaving her injured. She claimed that the sacred conch shell-bangle (shankha) on her wrist—symbolically significant for married Hindu women—was broken during the alleged assault. BJP leaders accompanying the protest condemned the incident, accusing the police of manhandling the grieving mother.

Police’s Response

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, addressing the media on August 10, said that the matter is under investigation. “We are examining the CCTV and video footage to verify the allegations. Only after reviewing the evidence can we confirm whether the victim’s mother was subjected to physical assault,” Verma stated.

The Commissioner assured that due process will be followed, but the victim’s father remains sceptical. He believes the repeated transfers of his complaint between police stations are an attempt to delay action.

A Year of Unending Struggle

The case of the RG Kar junior doctor’s rape and murder last year had sent shockwaves across West Bengal, sparking widespread outrage and demands for swift justice. One year later, the victim’s family continues to face not only the trauma of loss but also fresh incidents of alleged police misconduct.

Civil society groups and political leaders have voiced concern over the latest episode, urging the administration to treat the family with dignity and ensure that no further obstacles are placed in their pursuit of justice.

The victim’s father has made it clear that his fight will continue until both his daughter’s case and the recent incident involving his wife are addressed. “We are not asking for special treatment—only fairness. The police must be accountable,” he said.
