Gadar 2 marks two years since release, with director Anil Sharma revealing the film’s best part, challenges, and his faith in its success. He confirms Gadar 3 is in the works, promising the beloved saga of Tara, Sakina, and Jeeta will continue to win hearts.
Two years after its theatrical release, filmmaker Anil Sharma’s blockbuster Gadar 2—starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel—continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans. The period action drama, which carried forward the legacy of the 2001 hit Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, marked yet another milestone this Monday as it celebrated its second anniversary.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Anil Sharma reflected on the journey of making the sequel and revealed what he believes is the most remarkable aspect of Gadar 2.
“One of the best parts was seeing Utkarsh (Sharma), who played the child in Gadar 1, return as an adult in Gadar 2. I think this might be the first time in the world where the child actor grew up and reprised the same role,” Sharma said.
This continuity of casting, where Utkarsh Sharma seamlessly transitioned from playing young Jeeta in the first film to portraying him as an adult in the sequel, was a unique cinematic moment that struck a chord with audiences.
Challenges of Continuing the Story
When asked about the most difficult part of making Gadar 2, Sharma revealed that finding the right way to move the story forward was no easy feat.
“For me, the challenge was to find a way to move the story forward from Gadar 1. We spent a lot of time thinking about it. But when the story finally came together, it was worth the wait,” he explained.
The director acknowledged that the original film’s massive success had set a high bar for any sequel. Yet, despite the pressure, Sharma was confident about the outcome.
Faith in the Sequel’s Success
“Gadar became a part of the audience’s heart. For the last two decades, everyone kept asking me why I hadn’t made Gadar 2. I knew the love for the characters was immense,” Sharma shared.
His confidence was so strong that he even predicted the film’s financial success before its release.
“I had already predicted it—sending an email to Zee even before the release that it would make ₹500 crores. And thankfully, God listened,” Sharma said with a smile.
Why the Story Endures
According to Sharma, the enduring appeal of Gadar 2 lies in the unshakable emotional connection between the characters—Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), Sakina (Ameesha Patel), and Jeeta (Utkarsh Sharma).
“The love people have for these characters makes it a legacy in itself,” the filmmaker emphasized.
This deep emotional bond has ensured that the Gadar franchise remains memorable across generations.
Looking Ahead to Gadar 3
The filmmaker also confirmed that the Gadar journey is far from over.
“We are definitely working on Gadar 3. The story will continue. The success of both Gadar 1 and Gadar 2 shows that the story and characters have a special place in people’s hearts, and this will carry on in part three,” Sharma revealed.
While details about Gadar 3 remain under wraps, Sharma’s assurance has already sparked excitement among fans eager to see the next chapter in this epic saga.
