In a bid to support and uplift the agricultural community in Tripura, the state government has initiated the procurement of paddy from local farmers at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 21.83 per kg. The procurement program commenced on Tuesday at Bairagibazar Nat Mandir under the Sonamura subdivision and is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure the welfare of farmers during the “Kharif Season.”
The state government has set an ambitious target of procuring 40,000 metric tonnes of paddy during this season, utilizing 49 centers spread across eight districts of Tripura for the purpose.
Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Sushanta Chowdhury, inaugurated the program and highlighted various initiatives taken by the government to enhance the well-being of farmers in the state. He emphasized the government’s commitment to doubling the income of farmers by integrating modern technology and advancements in agriculture.
Chowdhury stated, “Farmers are provided with modern machinery, fertilizers, advanced quality seeds, and many more. Krishak Bandhu Kendra and Krishak Gyan Arjan Kendra are being opened in every agricultural sub-division to provide proper advice to the farmers.” Additionally, efforts are being made to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce, with the government procuring paddy at a minimum subsidized price.
The minister attributed the increased yield of farmers in recent years to the encouragement and assistance provided by the government. Regarding the decision to procure paddy at MSP, Chowdhury noted the positive impact on thousands of farmers, despite the increased financial burden on the Tripura government.
Highlighting the disparity under the previous administration, Chowdhury mentioned the absence of MSP arrangements for paddy procurement in Tripura, resulting in the deprivation of farmers. He commended the current government for initiating the MSP program and increasing the price per kg to Rs 21.83.
Expressing confidence in achieving the target of procuring 40,000 metric tonnes of paddy during the Kharif season, the minister encouraged farmers to sell their produce at the nearest agriculture department or Sub-Divisional Commissioner’s office. He instructed officials to ensure a smooth process, preventing any harassment of farmers selling paddy at the government-subsidized price at the designated centers.
