The Twipra Students Federation (TSF) has reaffirmed its decision to continue protests demanding the exclusive introduction of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. The agitation will persist until Monday when the issue is scheduled for discussion in the Tripura Assembly. The TSF leadership made this announcement at a press briefing at the Agartala Press Club.
TSF Vice President John Debbarma emphasized that the demand for the Roman script represents the aspirations of the indigenous community. “Our protest is peaceful, and we are open to dialogue with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. However, we stand firm on our demand and expect a concrete resolution,” Debbarma stated. He also urged indigenous leaders, including BJP Minister Bikas Debbarma and Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, to take a clear stance on the matter.
The protest escalated further as TSF, joined by the student wing of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), staged blockades at Hospital Chowmuhani in Gandacherra and Raisyabari. The movement has caused significant disruption, particularly in the Baramura and Teliamura areas, where a 45-km-long queue of goods trucks has formed, halting transportation. Commuters, including those traveling in ambulances, have faced severe inconveniences.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha addressed the issue in the Assembly, assuring the public that a resolution is being sought. “This government is committed to respecting all cultures and languages. We are actively working towards a solution,” he stated. The CM also referred to last year’s tripartite agreement between the Centre, state, and Tipra Motha, which included discussions on the introduction of the Roman script for Kokborok.
The TSF has announced a massive gathering before the Gandhi statue in Agartala on Monday to intensify their agitation. They expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s delay in making a definitive decision and vowed to continue their protests until their demand is met.
