Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha laid the foundation stone for a 100-bed government eye hospital in Agartala, featuring a modern G+4 building and advanced facilities. The hospital, linked to Agartala Government Medical College, is expected to strengthen eye care services and emerge as a Centre of Excellence.
Tripura took a significant step towards strengthening specialised healthcare services with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha laying the foundation stone for a proposed government eye hospital at the Capital Complex area in Agartala on Friday.
The proposed facility is being envisioned as a major addition to the state’s healthcare infrastructure and is expected to provide modern and advanced eye care services to patients. According to the plans, the hospital will have a capacity of 100 beds and will be developed as part of the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).
The hospital will be housed in a modern G+4 building equipped with advanced infrastructure and facilities for comprehensive eye care. The construction is expected to be completed within two years, marking an important expansion of specialised medical services in the state.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying programme, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed confidence that the proposed government eye hospital would eventually become one of the leading eye care institutions in the Northeast. He said the facility should be developed with the objective of transforming it into a Centre of Excellence in eye care.
The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of modern infrastructure and quality medical services in improving healthcare delivery. He said the state government has been taking several initiatives to strengthen the overall healthcare system, with technology playing an increasingly important role in providing services to citizens.
Dr. Saha also highlighted the government’s focus on digital healthcare in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. He said Tripura has made considerable progress in expanding digital health services, with ABHA cards already generated for around 80 per cent of the state’s population.
The Chief Minister said efforts were also continuing to improve healthcare infrastructure beyond the state capital. According to him, steps are being taken to strengthen hospitals at district and sub-divisional levels so that people can access quality healthcare services closer to their homes.
The proposed eye hospital is expected to play an important role in expanding access to specialised ophthalmic treatment. With modern infrastructure and advanced facilities planned for the new institution, the project is expected to benefit patients requiring specialised eye care while reducing the need to depend on facilities outside the state for treatment.
Dr. Saha also addressed concerns regarding rainwater entering the trauma centre at GBP Hospital. He alleged that the building had been constructed without adequate planning during the tenure of the previous government. He criticised the Opposition for raising the issue at the present time and alleged that attempts were being made to mislead the younger generation on various matters.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, senior government officials and representatives of the Health Department.

The proposed government eye hospital is now set to become an important component of Tripura’s efforts to expand specialised healthcare infrastructure.
