In a major boost to the fisheries sector in Tripura, the foundation stone for an Integrated Aquapark will be laid at Kailashahar, Unakoti district, with an estimated investment of Rs. 42.4 crore on Sunday. The initiative, under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aims to modernize fish production, processing, and marketing infrastructure in the state.
The foundation stone will be laid by Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying (MoFAH&D), and Minister of Panchayati Raj, during an event to be held in Agartala on Sunday. The event will also feature the inauguration of a one-day Fish Festival. Dignitaries in attendance will include George Kurian, Minister of State, MoFAH&D and Ministry of Minority Affairs, along with Sudhangshu Das, Minister of Fisheries, Government of Tripura.
During the event, certificates and sanction orders will be distributed to beneficiaries in the fisheries sector, including the issuance of Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to eligible fishers and fish farmers. The event will also recognize the best performing Cooperatives, Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs), and fisheries start-ups for their contributions, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
The Integrated Aquapark in Kailashahar is part of a flagship intervention under PMMSY aimed at establishing comprehensive hubs that support the entire fisheries and aquaculture value chain. These hubs will feature hatcheries, feed mills, cold storage, processing units, training facilities, and marketing infrastructure under one roof. The project is designed to enhance productivity, promote innovation, and generate employment, particularly benefiting youth and women in the region.

The Department of Fisheries, MoFAH&D, envisions these Aquaparks as more than just infrastructure projects; they are designed to act as catalysts for value chain development and sustainable growth. The parks will follow a hub-and-spoke model, tailored to meet regional needs, ensuring end-to-end solutions from production to retail.
Tripura has positioned itself as a leading state in fisheries, supported by initiatives like PMMSY and the Blue Revolution. In the past decade, the state has received projects worth Rs. 319 crores to expand aquaculture, improve infrastructure, and boost fishers’ welfare. With a high per capita fish consumption of over 29 kg per year, the state has made significant progress in the sector.
