Tripura collected over Rs 52 crore in traffic violation fines over three years, Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the Assembly, citing rising penalties from drunk driving, overloading, speeding and other offences amid intensified enforcement and e-challan monitoring.
Tripura has collected more than Rs 52 crore in fines from traffic law violations over the past three financial years, Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday, highlighting a steady rise in enforcement against road traffic offences across the state.
Replying to an unstarred question raised by MLA Nayan Sarkar, Dr. Saha said the state collected Rs 16.23 crore in traffic fines during 2023–24. The amount increased to Rs 17.79 crore in 2024–25 before rising further to Rs 18.02 crore in 2025–26.
The figures presented in the Assembly indicate a consistent increase in the collection of penalties, reflecting intensified monitoring and enforcement of traffic regulations. The government has been using prosecution reports as well as digital enforcement mechanisms to identify and penalise motorists violating road safety rules.
In response to another query from MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath, the Chief Minister provided a detailed breakdown of traffic violations recorded during the financial year 2025–26.
According to the data, authorities filed 1,276 prosecution reports (PRs) for drunk driving, resulting in the collection of Rs 12.90 lakh in fines. In cases involving overloaded vehicles, 4,547 prosecution reports were filed, with penalties amounting to Rs 1.29 crore.
For over-speeding violations, authorities filed 2,700 prosecution reports, collecting Rs 1.15 crore in fines. However, the largest share of penalties came under the category of other traffic violations.
During 2025–26, officials recorded 63,592 prosecution reports and 41,637 e-challans for other traffic offences. These violations generated Rs 16.29 crore in fines, making them the biggest contributor to traffic penalty collections during the year.
The enforcement drive continued into the current financial year. Up to July 31, 2026, authorities had registered 398 prosecution reports for drunk driving, collecting Rs 4.86 lakh in fines. Overloading cases accounted for 1,701 prosecution reports, generating Rs 44.08 lakh.
Meanwhile, 791 prosecution reports for over-speeding resulted in the collection of Rs 31.18 lakh during the same period.
Other traffic violations remained the dominant category in 2026–27 as well. Authorities recorded 23,965 prosecution reports and 10,010 e-challans, with fines amounting to Rs 5.18 crore up to July 31.
Official records showed that the combined fines collected during 2025–26 and up to July 31 of 2026–27 stood at Rs 24.85 crore.
Dr. Saha said the state’s traffic enforcement system relies on both conventional prosecution reports and the e-challan system to strengthen accountability and ensure greater compliance with traffic regulations.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of traffic safety campaigns and regular monitoring as part of the Home Department’s efforts to improve road discipline and reduce accidents.

The rising collection of traffic fines comes amid continued government efforts to enforce road safety regulations and deter violations such as drunk driving, overloading and excessive speed. The Assembly data indicate that enforcement remains a key component of Tripura’s strategy to promote safer roads and encourage motorists to follow traffic laws.
