Tripura Assembly witnessed a stormy session over Opposition allegations that a suicide note allegedly left by former DGP Anurag disappeared and later resurfaced. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman demanded transparency, while the government defended its handling of the case.
The final sitting of the ongoing Tripura Legislative Assembly session turned stormy on Monday as Opposition legislators raised serious questions over the alleged disappearance and subsequent recovery of a suicide note reportedly left behind by former Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag.
The controversy erupted shortly before Question Hour when senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman raised the issue on the floor of the House. Barman claimed that the wife of the former DGP, who arrived in Tripura on Sunday, had sought access to the alleged suicide note and maintained that she had a photograph of the document.
According to the Congress legislator, the original note had reportedly been removed and concealed, raising questions over its whereabouts and the manner in which it was being handled. His allegations immediately triggered tension inside the Assembly, with Opposition members demanding clarification from the government.
Speaker Rampada Jamatia intervened and ruled that the issue could not be raised in the manner attempted by the Congress MLA. The Speaker reminded members that Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had already made statements regarding the matter twice during the ongoing Assembly session.
Jamatia urged Barman not to create confusion in the House and asked him to take his seat so that the proceedings could continue according to Assembly rules. However, the Speaker’s ruling failed to pacify the Opposition.
Congress and CPI(M) legislators subsequently entered the well of the House carrying placards and raising slogans. The protesting MLAs demanded transparency regarding what they described as the alleged disappearance of the former DGP’s suicide note.
The disruption temporarily threatened to derail Question Hour. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath appealed to the Speaker to allow the scheduled proceedings to continue. He suggested that the Opposition members could raise the issue separately after the listed business of the House.
Following the intervention, the protesting legislators withdrew from the well and returned to their seats, allowing the Assembly to resume its scheduled agenda.
The confrontation has added another contentious dimension to the debate surrounding the death of the former senior police officer. While the government has maintained that the matter has already been addressed during the Assembly session, the Opposition has continued to demand greater transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide note and its handling.
Later, Roy Barman spoke to the media and made further allegations concerning the document. He claimed that the suicide note was initially said to have been found on Dhankar’s table, but was subsequently reported missing. According to Barman, the document later resurfaced from the pocket of the deceased officer’s uniform when the belongings were handed over to his wife.
The Congress MLA questioned how a document of such significance could allegedly disappear from one location and later be recovered from the deceased officer’s clothing. He argued that the circumstances raised questions about the integrity and chain of custody of the investigation.
Barman did not reveal the alleged contents of the note. However, he suggested that it could contain sensitive information that might be uncomfortable for certain individuals. He therefore called for the authenticity of the document and the complete sequence of its handling to be examined thoroughly.
The Congress leader also questioned what he described as attempts to associate the former DGP’s death primarily with family-related issues, including matters concerning his son’s marriage. Barman argued that investigators should also examine whether institutional, professional or other pressures could have played a role.
He questioned why a note containing only personal reasons, as he suggested, would allegedly have been hidden or become unavailable.
Barman also directly challenged Chief Minister Manik Saha over his earlier statements in the Assembly. He claimed that he had invited the Chief Minister to refute his allegations if they were incorrect and had even offered to resign as an MLA if his claims were proven false.
According to Barman, the Chief Minister did not directly contradict his allegations during the proceedings. The Congress MLA said this raised questions about the government’s position and its handling of the matter.
The Opposition legislator further alleged that political interference in the investigation could not be ruled out and warned that any compromise in transparency involving the death of a senior police officer could have wider implications for public confidence in the justice system.

The government has not accepted the Opposition’s allegations of concealment or political interference. The dispute over the alleged suicide note is expected to remain a major political issue in Tripura as demands grow for clarity regarding the document’s discovery, custody, recovery and examination.
With the Assembly session concluding amid the heated exchange, the controversy has placed renewed focus on the investigation into the former DGP’s death and the need for a clear account of how the alleged suicide note was handled.
