Tripura Has Adequate Stock of Essential Commodities, Says Sushanta Chowdhury and Emphasizes Vigilant Supply Chain Management and Ground-Level Engagement During Inspector Training Session

Tripura’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Thursday assured the public that the state currently has sufficient stocks of food grains and essential commodities, dismissing any speculation or concerns over shortages. Speaking to media persons after inaugurating a five-day training programme for newly appointed Food Inspectors at SIPARD (State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development), Chowdhury said that the situation had been recently reviewed at an internal departmental meeting.

“As per the official data available with the department, there is no crisis at all. We have adequate buffer stocks of food grains and other essential commodities to meet public demand. There is no need for panic,” the Minister said, firmly countering any fears of inflationary pressure due to supply disruption.

Training Programme for New Inspectors

The Minister was addressing both the media and the newly inducted Food Inspectors as the department launched an extensive five-day induction training aimed at equipping the recruits with the knowledge and tools required for their role in public service.

“This training is crucial to prepare the new officers for the responsibilities they are about to take up,” Chowdhury said. “As Food Inspectors, their role will be vital in monitoring markets, ensuring the availability of essential items at fair prices, and preventing hoarding or profiteering.”

The training will cover a range of topics including market inspection protocols, consumer rights enforcement, supply chain monitoring, pricing regulations, and emergency response coordination in case of disruptions.

Balancing Market Forces with Public Welfare

Explaining the complexity of supply chain dynamics, the Minister said that market equilibrium must be maintained to ensure both consumer and trader interests are safeguarded. He cited examples of crisis scenarios—such as transportation disruptions or natural calamities—where the food department must intervene strategically.

“When markets spiral out of control due to external reasons, the department’s role becomes more crucial,” Chowdhury explained. “We must ensure that essential commodities remain accessible to the common people while also protecting the business community from unfair losses. But, at the same time, strict action will be taken against those indulging in black marketing or hoarding.”

This balanced approach, he said, is at the heart of the department’s public service mandate.

Social Commitment and Field Visibility

In an encouraging message to the new inspectors, the Minister urged them to be visible, active, and socially engaged field officers. He emphasized that the food department is not merely a regulatory agency but also an important link between the government and the people during both normal times and crises.

“Our first commitment is toward society,” Chowdhury told the recruits. “You are not just bureaucrats in offices—you are boots on the ground. You must build relationships with the people, understand their concerns, and be proactive in resolving issues.”

He reminded them that maintaining public trust and ensuring transparency in operations would be key factors in their service records.

Performance Monitoring and Rewards

Highlighting the government’s commitment to performance-based recognition, the Minister announced that the work of all new inspectors would be monitored closely. “The department will maintain detailed service records of each officer. Those who perform well and fulfill their duties diligently will certainly be recognized and rewarded in the future,” he said.

The state government, he added, is serious about building an efficient and responsive public delivery system where each officer is held accountable for their role.

Assurance Amid Global Disruptions

Chowdhury’s remarks also come at a time when many regions in India are facing concerns over fluctuating commodity prices and uneven monsoon forecasts that can affect agricultural outputs. His reassurance, backed by a firm administrative tone, is seen as a timely intervention to prevent panic buying or market speculation.

The Food and Civil Supplies Department has been pivotal in implementing PDS (Public Distribution System) reforms, streamlining ration card databases, and ensuring rural outreach through fair price shops in Tripura’s remote areas.

With strong stock positions and a trained new cadre of inspectors on the ground, the state appears poised to maintain stability in the supply of essential goods. The launch of this training session also signals the department’s forward-looking approach to governance, combining efficiency, community engagement, and preparedness.
