Tripura Observes World Environment Day With Strong Calls to End Plastic Pollution
The capital city of Agartala witnessed a vibrant and environmentally charged atmosphere on Wednesday as Tripura marked World Environment Day 2025 with a series of public events and rallies. Centered around the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally,” the celebrations drew widespread participation from government departments, academic institutions, environmental groups, and hundreds of citizens—especially students and youth.

The primary rally, organized jointly by the Tripura State Pollution Control Board and the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, turned the city’s central streets into a powerful platform for climate action and environmental awareness. Students from NSS units of various schools and colleges marched in unison, holding placards and chanting slogans urging people to reduce plastic use and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
Speaking to reporters during the event, State Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma emphasized the urgency of addressing plastic pollution. “World Environment Day reminds us that the planet cannot wait. The dangers of plastic pollution are not distant—they’re here, affecting our soil, water, animals, and even our own health. This is not just an environmental issue, it’s a human issue,” he said.
The Minister called upon the public to take individual and collective responsibility, encouraging the adoption of green practices such as using cloth bags, planting trees, and reducing dependence on single-use plastics. He also highlighted the state government’s initiatives in waste management and afforestation and urged the youth to become active agents of change.

Pedaling for the Planet: Techno India University Hosts Bicycle Rally
Adding another dimension to the day’s events, Techno India University, Tripura, in collaboration with the Agartala Cycloholics Foundation, organized a unique 20-kilometer bicycle rally to mark both World Environment Day and Biodiversity Day 2025. Starting from the historic Ujjayanta Palace and concluding at the university campus, the rally brought together 75 passionate cyclists, including students, faculty, and members of the public.

With messages like “Beat Plastic Pollution” and “Cycle for a Sustainable Future”, the rally aimed not only at reducing carbon footprints but also promoting road safety and sustainable mobility in urban areas. Cyclists stopped at various public points to interact with citizens and conducted a mini-awareness campaign for motorists, urging them to maintain a 4-feet safety distance from cyclists. To reinforce this message, stickers carrying road safety tips were affixed to several four-wheelers during the rally.
In a show of solidarity and commitment, Vice Chancellor of Techno India University not only addressed the participants but also completed the entire 20-kilometer route on a bicycle. “Riding a cycle is a small act, but it sends a big message,” he said. “It’s about responsibility—toward our health, our environment, and our community.”
The event received strong institutional backing from several organizations including the Tripura Biodiversity Board, the Office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), and the Government College of Art & Craft. Upon completion of the rally, participants were greeted with medals and certificates in recognition of their efforts.
Techno India University also honored its Cycling Community Group, which has been instrumental in encouraging non-motorized transportation on campus. Speaking at the felicitation ceremony, Agartala’s Bicycle Mayor Gopesh Debnath urged citizens to adopt sustainable habits. “It’s not just about cycling—it’s about the choices we make every day,” he said. “Use bamboo straws, carry reusable bags, reduce littering. These actions, though small, build up to a cleaner, safer future.”
Unified Message, Urgent Appeal
Together, the twin rallies in Agartala delivered a unified and urgent message: the time to act on environmental issues—especially plastic pollution—is now. Through collective efforts from the government, academic bodies, civic groups, and the public, World Environment Day in Tripura became more than a symbolic observance. It transformed into a movement for change.
As the state moves forward with its developmental and environmental goals, the 2025 World Environment Day observance in Agartala stands out as a model of participatory action, underscoring the importance of community engagement in addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges.
