The state government has taken a significant step towards improving animal welfare by banning the manufacture, sale, and use of unscientific gestation and farrowing crates in pig farming.
The decision, aligned with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, underscores the importance of providing animals with humane housing for their overall well-being and reproduction.
The use of these restrictive crates has been found to cause severe discomfort and stress to sows, impacting their health, psychological state, and reproductive abilities. By enforcing the ban, the government aims to address the welfare of these intelligent animals and align with the standards of other states across India.
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has expressed their support for this effort. According to PETA India, pigs form strong bonds with their offspring and suffer when confined in such limited spaces.
With Tripura joining the ranks of 26 other states and union territories in India, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand, in taking action against the use of gestation and farrowing crates, this move reinforces the commitment to humane treatment of animals in the country.
Gestation crates, also known as “sow stalls,” restrict the movement of pregnant sows, depriving them of natural behaviours and conditions necessary for their well-being. The ban underscores the importance of ethical and compassionate animal husbandry practices in the region.
