Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a Mumbai meeting with banks to address Self-Help Group women’s financial challenges, improve loan access, strengthen DAY-NRLM financial inclusion and empower rural women entrepreneurs through better banking support and livelihood opportunities.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chaired a high-level meeting with banking institutions and State Rural Livelihoods Missions in Mumbai to discuss challenges faced by women members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and explore practical solutions to strengthen financial inclusion.

The meeting brought together policymakers, banking representatives, rural women entrepreneurs and key stakeholders involved in the implementation of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). Discussions focused on improving access to formal finance, expanding livelihood opportunities and creating a more supportive financial ecosystem for rural women entrepreneurs.

A major focus of the meeting was the difficulties faced by SHG members while accessing bank loans and other financial services. Issues related to documentation, banking procedures and financial processes were discussed in detail. The meeting highlighted the need for stronger coordination between banking institutions and rural livelihood missions to ensure that eligible women can access financial services without unnecessary difficulties.

During the interaction, Chouhan also met Lakhpati Didis and women members of Self-Help Groups and listened to their experiences, aspirations and concerns. The women shared challenges they encounter while seeking bank loans and navigating various financial procedures.

The Union Minister assured the participants that efforts would be made to engage with bankers and address the issues raised by SHG women through practical and effective solutions. The discussions aimed at making the process of accessing institutional credit easier and more responsive to the needs of rural women entrepreneurs.

The meeting was also significant in the broader context of strengthening financial inclusion under DAY-NRLM. Self-Help Groups have emerged as an important platform for rural women to develop livelihoods, generate income and participate more actively in local economic activities. Improved access to credit and banking services can further support women-led enterprises and help expand livelihood opportunities in rural communities.

Representatives from State Rural Livelihoods Missions also contributed to the discussions. The Chief Operating Officer of Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) participated in the Mumbai meeting, contributing to deliberations on building a stronger and more inclusive rural livelihood ecosystem.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan, Rural Development Department Secretary Rohit Kansal and other senior officials.

The discussions underlined the importance of collaboration among the government, banks and rural livelihood institutions to strengthen financial inclusion for women. By addressing barriers related to credit, documentation and banking procedures, the initiative seeks to enable more rural women to become financially independent and expand their entrepreneurial activities.

The emphasis on Lakhpati Didis and SHG members reflects the government’s broader focus on empowering rural women through sustainable livelihoods and greater economic participation. Strengthening access to finance is expected to help women-led households improve income opportunities while contributing to stronger rural economies.
