Tripura Medical College gets 50 new MBBS seats sanctioned by the National Medical Commission, increasing its intake from 100 to 150. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha thanks PM Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for supporting Tripura’s medical education growth.
In a major boost to medical education in Tripura, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned an additional 50 MBBS seats for Tripura Medical College and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Agartala. With this approval, the total number of MBBS seats at the institution has now increased from 100 to 150, marking a new milestone in the state’s medical education journey.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who is also a medical professional himself, shared the news on social media on Tuesday, describing it as “another great news for medical education aspirants.” The decision, he said, reflects the Centre’s continued commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and opportunities for medical students in Tripura.
“The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned an additional 50 MBBS seats for Tripura Medical College and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Agartala. With this, the total MBBS intake at TMC has increased from 100 to 150, raising the overall MBBS seats in Tripura to 450,” Dr. Saha stated in his post.
He further highlighted that in the past three years, Tripura has achieved a record addition of 225 MBBS seats, a remarkable growth that demonstrates the state government’s relentless efforts to strengthen both medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
Tripura’s Medical Growth Under the Present Government
The steady expansion of medical education opportunities in Tripura over the last few years has been one of the key focus areas of the state government. Before this latest approval, Tripura had 400 MBBS seats across its government and private institutions. The new addition has now raised the total capacity to 450 MBBS seats, giving more students the opportunity to pursue medical education within the state rather than going elsewhere.
The Chief Minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their “unwavering support and guidance” in developing Tripura’s health and education sectors.
“In the last three years, we have achieved a record addition of 225 MBBS seats in the state—a remarkable milestone in our continuous efforts to strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure,” Dr. Saha mentioned, thanking the central leadership for their consistent cooperation.
This increase in seats is expected to not only benefit aspiring doctors but also help strengthen the healthcare delivery system in Tripura in the long run. More medical graduates will mean more trained professionals available to serve in the state’s hospitals, clinics, and rural healthcare centers.
Strengthening the State’s Healthcare Infrastructure
Tripura Medical College, affiliated with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital, has been one of the most important medical institutions in the state, catering to thousands of patients every year. With the expansion of MBBS intake, the institution will have the capacity to train more young doctors and contribute to addressing the doctor-to-patient ratio gap in the north-eastern region.
The National Medical Commission’s approval followed a detailed review of the college’s facilities, faculty strength, and infrastructure, ensuring compliance with national standards. The addition of new seats also reflects the institution’s ability to maintain high academic and professional standards.
According to officials, this move aligns with the Government of India’s vision to make quality medical education more accessible across the country, particularly in the north-eastern states. The expansion will also likely encourage more investments in healthcare infrastructure, laboratories, and student facilities in Tripura.
A Step Toward Self-Reliance in Healthcare
The approval of new seats at TMC is part of Tripura’s broader mission to become self-reliant in healthcare services. By increasing the number of home-grown medical graduates, the state aims to reduce its dependence on external manpower and improve healthcare accessibility even in remote districts.
This latest achievement underlines the success of the ‘Double Engine Government’ model championed by the central and state administrations. The expansion is expected to inspire further reforms in medical education, nursing programs, and paramedical training institutes in Tripura, ultimately benefiting both students and patients alike.
