Tripura faces a severe teacher shortage with over 4,200 GT and PGT posts vacant. Recruitment delays and lack of appointments worsen the education crisis, impacting students, schools, and academic performance across the state.

Tripura’s secondary education system is grappling with a deepening crisis as more than 4,200 teaching positions remain vacant across the state. The shortage, affecting Graduate Teachers (GT), Post Graduate Teachers (PGT), and Special Educators, has raised serious concerns about the quality of education and student outcomes in government schools.

The alarming figures were disclosed in the Tripura Legislative Assembly in response to a question raised by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhary. According to the written reply presented in the House, a total of 2,176 Graduate Teacher posts for Classes IX–X and 2,050 Post Graduate Teacher posts for Classes XI–XII are currently lying vacant under the Directorate of Secondary Education.

The crisis is further compounded by the absence of recruitment drives during the financial years 2023–24 and 2024–25. This prolonged gap in hiring has significantly worsened the shortage, leaving many schools understaffed and struggling to maintain academic standards.

Adding to the concern, 112 posts for Special Educators also remain unfilled, highlighting deficiencies in inclusive education for students with special needs. While the government has initiated some steps, progress remains slow. Of the 112 vacant Special Educator positions, 57 candidates have been issued appointment offers, but their postings are yet to be finalized. Similarly, 106 candidates selected for Physical Education Teacher roles are still awaiting deployment.

Officials have acknowledged the urgency of the situation and stated that requisitions have been sent to the Teachers’ Recruitment Board Tripura to fill 1,733 teaching positions. These include 700 Graduate Teacher posts, 915 Post Graduate Teacher posts, and 118 PGT (Computer Science) roles. The recruitment is expected to be conducted through a selection test in the coming months.

However, education experts warn that even if these 1,733 positions are filled promptly, a substantial gap will still persist. The current vacancies exceed 4,200, meaning that thousands of posts will remain unaddressed unless further recruitment measures are taken.

The impact of this shortage is already visible on the ground. Students across Tripura have repeatedly staged protests demanding adequate teaching staff, particularly in higher secondary classes where subject specialization is crucial. The lack of PGTs has disrupted regular classes, affected syllabus completion, and placed additional burden on existing teachers.

Parents and educators alike fear that the continued shortage could have long-term consequences on students’ academic performance, especially in board examinations. The situation also raises questions about policy planning and administrative efficiency in the education sector.

As Tripura attempts to bridge the gap, stakeholders are calling for immediate and sustained recruitment efforts, faster deployment of selected candidates, and long-term planning to prevent such crises in the future. Without swift intervention, the state’s education system risks further decline, leaving thousands of students at a disadvantage.
