Tripura achieves zero dropout rate in primary schools, Chief Minister Manik Saha announces in Assembly. Landmark education reforms, NIPUN Bharat Mission, and strong student retention policies ensure 100% enrollment and attendance, setting a national benchmark in primary education success.

In a remarkable achievement for the education sector, the northeastern state of Tripura has recorded a zero dropout rate in primary schools, setting a new benchmark for student retention and inclusive education. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Manik Saha during a session of the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Responding to a query raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, the Chief Minister highlighted that the state’s Department of Elementary Education has implemented a comprehensive set of measures aimed at ensuring that every child enrolled from Class I to V continues their education without interruption.

According to Dr. Saha, the success is the result of sustained policy focus and multi-layered interventions. One of the key initiatives contributing to this achievement is the NIPUN Bharat Mission, which focuses on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills among young learners. The state has also introduced the Saharsa Tripura initiative, designed to support the emotional, social, and mental well-being of children—factors often linked to school dropouts.

Infrastructure development has played a crucial role in improving school attendance. Primary schools across Tripura have been equipped with modern facilities, including libraries, digital learning tools, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls. Additionally, the supply of learning and play materials has made classrooms more engaging and child-friendly.

To ensure that no child falls through the cracks, the government has leveraged the UDISE tracking system. This digital monitoring mechanism helps authorities identify and track students at risk of dropping out. Special training programmes have also been conducted to reintegrate out-of-school children into the formal education system.

Recognizing the geographical challenges in remote and tribal areas, the government has established residential hostels to provide access to schooling for children living in distant regions. Financial support measures, including stipends for children with special needs, have further strengthened inclusivity.

Moreover, the consistent distribution of free uniforms and textbooks has eased the financial burden on families, while regular parent-teacher meetings have helped build stronger community engagement and awareness about the importance of education.

Dr. Saha emphasized that these combined efforts have ensured universal participation in primary education, making Tripura one of the few states in India to achieve zero dropout rates at this level. He described the milestone as a “collective success” of the government, educators, parents, and students.

Education experts and policymakers have widely welcomed the development, calling it a model worth replicating across other states. The achievement not only reflects improved governance but also highlights the impact of targeted welfare schemes and community participation.

As India continues its push toward universal education, Tripura’s success story stands as a powerful example of how strategic planning, effective implementation, and inclusive policies can transform the educational landscape.
