Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar warns that road traffic accidents are killing youth aged 18–25, the state’s most productive population. Despite reduced fatalities in 2025, police stress awareness, anti-drug drives, and strict traffic enforcement to prevent further loss.

Anurag Dhankar, Director General of Tripura Police, has expressed deep concern over the rising social and economic consequences of road traffic accidents (RTAs), stating that a majority of the victims belong to the most productive age group of 18 to 25 years.

Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony organized as part of the ‘Police Week’ celebrations in Agartala on Thursday, the DGP highlighted that although the state has witnessed measurable improvements in road safety statistics in 2025, the loss of young lives continues to pose serious long-term challenges.

9% Drop in Accidents, 13% Reduction in Fatalities in 2025

DGP Anurag revealed that road traffic accidents in Tripura have reduced by 9 percent in 2025 compared to 2024. Fatalities have also decreased by 13 percent during the same period. However, he cautioned against complacency.

“While the numbers show improvement, enforcement alone cannot solve the issue. We need higher public awareness about the root causes of accidents. Only then can we achieve sustained reductions,” he said.

According to him, scientific analysis shows that 65 percent of those who lost their lives in road accidents fall within the 18–25 age bracket. He described this age group as the “most productive phase” of an individual’s life, when they begin contributing actively to the state’s economy and society.

“This is not merely a tragedy for families; it is a collective loss for the entire state. When young lives are cut short, it directly impacts our social fabric and economic growth,” the DGP emphasized.

Four Major Causes Behind Road Traffic Accidents

The DGP outlined four key factors responsible for the majority of road accidents in the state:

  1. Over-speeding: Scientific studies indicate that even a one percent increase in speed raises the probability of an accident by four percent.

  2. Driving Under the Influence: Consumption of alcohol or drugs increases the likelihood of accidents fivefold.

  3. Use of Mobile Phones While Driving: Distracted driving significantly compromises reaction time and judgment.

  4. Non-Usage of Helmets: Failure to wear protective gear leads to higher fatality rates, especially among two-wheeler riders.

He stressed that strict adherence to traffic laws could substantially reduce accident numbers. Addressing children who participated in a sit-and-draw competition during Police Week, he urged them to spread awareness among their parents and teachers.

“The more informed our citizens are about these facts, the fewer accidents we will see in the future,” he added.

Marathon Runs to Promote Awareness

As part of Police Week celebrations, marathon runs were organized across all district headquarters to spread awareness about road safety and social issues.

In Agartala, the DGP flagged off a marathon organized by West Tripura District Police at Umakanta Stadium. Senior officials and District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar were present during the event.

Similar runs were conducted across various districts. One marathon covered the stretch between Netaji Choumuhani and Manubazar School Choumuhani, drawing participation from students and local residents. Another run began at Unakoti Kalakshetra and concluded at Kailashahar Police Station, aiming to promote awareness about both drug eradication and the new Criminal Law, 2023.

Udaipur hosted the “Run for Drug-Free Tripura,” which saw active participation from police personnel, youth groups, and citizens. A similar awareness marathon was also organized in Santirbazar.

Strong Crackdown on Drug Abuse

While addressing the gathering, DGP Anurag also highlighted the state government’s determination to eliminate drug abuse. He stated that police achievements in 2025 have surpassed those of 2024, particularly in dismantling trafficking networks.

“Drugs have emerged as a grave social problem. Tripura Police is fully committed to building a drug-free state,” he asserted.

Officials reiterated that road safety and anti-drug campaigns are interconnected public welfare missions, as substance abuse often contributes to traffic accidents.

A Call for Collective Responsibility

The DGP concluded by emphasizing that ensuring road safety requires a collective approach involving law enforcement, educational institutions, families, and civil society. While statistical improvements indicate progress, the ultimate goal remains zero fatalities.

By focusing on awareness, responsible driving behavior, and strict compliance with traffic laws, authorities believe that the state can significantly reduce the loss of young and productive lives in the years ahead.
