Porobasi, directed by Monet Roy Saha, revisits 1960s Partition trauma through a poignant tale of displacement and reunion. Shot in Tripura, this Bengali film blends powerful performances, evocative music, and human resilience into unforgettable cinema.

Set against the turbulent times of the 1960s, Porobasi tells a deeply human story.

Against the backdrop of the political and social unrest of the 1960s, the new Bengali film Porobasi, made in Tripura, brings before the audience a humane narrative of displacement, separation, and the longing to return home. The film is directed by FTII graduate and son of Tripura’s soil, Monet Roy Saha.

The story revolves around the family of Nimai Master, a village school teacher and former freedom fighter, who become victims of post-Partition riots and forced displacement. Fleeing their homeland, the family takes refuge in the unfamiliar land of Tripura. Their daughter Asima, due to a series of circumstances, becomes separated from her family and finds shelter with a family across the border in another country. This raises an emotionally charged question—will Asima ultimately be able to reunite with her own family? The film’s narrative moves forward around this poignant question.

The principal cast includes Loknath Dey, Kinjal Nanda, Swati Mukherjee, Devapratim Dasgupta, Sabuj Bardhan, Ankhi Ghosh (Kolkata), Ranjita Barua (Guwahati), Sanjay Kar, Ruhi Debbarma, Supriti Ghosh, Ruma Debbarma, Binod Debbarma, Ajay Tripura, along with many other talented artists from Tripura.

A major portion of the film was shot in Tripura. Its enchanting natural beauty and the participation of local artists lend the film a strong sense of realism. The visuals—rivers, villages, and hilly landscapes—are sure to captivate audiences.

The film is produced by Purba Diganta Film Production. The story writer and producer is Anil Debnath. Music direction is by Amit Chatterjee, cinematography by Joyesh Nair. The songs feature voices of Shaan, Iman Chakraborty, Durnibar Saha, Mekhla Dasgupta, and Ikshita.

Recently, the trailer of the film was launched at a grand event at Sukanta Academy in Agartala, attended by the film’s actors, singers, director, producer, and crew.

With a runtime of one hour and forty-four minutes, this film is not a glossy romantic entertainer. Rather, it stands as an example of pure storytelling and powerful performances. For viewers who appreciate meaningful and humane cinema, Porobasi is undoubtedly a must-watch.
