The Sensex dropped 27 points to close at 82 thousand 249, while the Nifty rose 14 points to settle at 25 thousand 497.
Earlier, the markets opened marginally higher, tracking firm global cues. However, they reversed most of their early morning gains by midday, amid profit booking in select sectors following the initial upmove. Although they attempted a modest recovery in the final hour of trade, the markets ultimately settled on a mixed note.
In the forex market today, the rupee appreciated by four paise to close at 90 rupees and 91 paise against the US dollar.
