Tripura Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, approves 305 new posts and recruitment for 1,277 positions across departments, including 916 police constables, 219 LDCs, 200 assistant professors, technical staff and Tribal Welfare posts. Cabinet also clears Shri Shri University Bill, 2026, with campus planned in Sepahijala district.
The Tripura state council of ministers, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, has approved the creation of 305 new posts and recruitment against 1,277 positions across several departments, Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Thursday.
The decisions cover major recruitment initiatives in the Tripura Police, Health and Family Welfare, General Administration, Tribal Welfare and Higher Education departments. The Cabinet also approved the Shri Shri University, Tripura Bill, 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a new university in Sepahijala district.
Among the major decisions, the Cabinet approved the direct recruitment of 916 male and female constables in the Tripura Police under the Home Department. According to Chowdhury, candidates will be selected through a recruitment process involving physical efficiency tests, written examinations and oral examinations.
The decision is expected to strengthen the police force and provide employment opportunities for eligible candidates across the state. The recruitment will cover both male and female constable positions.
The Health and Family Welfare Department has also received approval to recruit 219 Lower Division Clerks (LDCs) through the Tripura Joint Recruitment Board. The recruitment is expected to fill clerical vacancies and support administrative operations within the department.
In another decision, the Cabinet approved the recruitment of 27 Group-C technical personnel under the General Administration (Printing and Stationery) Department. The posts include chargeman, chargeman retouching, chargeman offset machine, copy holder, Kokborok copy holder, machine man and binder.
The Cabinet further approved the creation of 105 posts for four proposed Government Railway Police (GRP) stations at Bishramganja, Udaipur, Belonia and Sabroom. The new positions include sub-inspectors, women sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, women head constables, women constables and constable drivers.
The proposed GRP stations are expected to strengthen railway-related policing and security arrangements in the respective areas. The creation of dedicated posts is part of the state’s efforts to improve policing infrastructure connected with railway services.
The Tribal Welfare Department will also fill 15 fixed-pay posts through the Tripura Joint Recruitment Board. These positions will include Lower Division Clerks and multi-tasking staff.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved the creation of 200 assistant professor posts for government general degree colleges under the Higher Education Department. However, Chowdhury clarified that the approval relates to the creation of posts and does not represent an immediate decision to recruit against all 200 positions.
The Cabinet’s decision on higher education is expected to provide additional staffing capacity for government degree colleges as and when recruitment is undertaken.
Another significant decision was the approval of the Shri Shri University, Tripura Bill, 2026. According to the minister, the proposed university will have the authority to offer certificate, diploma, postgraduate diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, along with MPhil, PhD and post-doctoral programmes.
The university will also be empowered to confer honorary degrees such as D.Litt and D.Sc. Its proposed academic scope will cover a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering and technology, architecture and planning, social sciences and humanities, commerce and management, AYUSH, yoga and naturopathy, and medical sciences.
Chowdhury said the proposed university will have its campus in Sepahijala district. The institution is expected to broaden higher education opportunities in Tripura by offering programmes across multiple academic and professional fields.
