Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu highlighted pig farming’s vital role in the rural economy at a state-level workshop in Agartala, stressing scientific technologies, innovation, disease prevention, better management and government support to improve productivity, farmer income, employment and sustainable growth in the state’s livestock sector.

Tripura Governor N. Indrasena Reddy Nallu highlighted the significant contribution of pig farming to the state’s rural economy while inaugurating a state-level seminar-cum-workshop on innovative and scientific technologies in pig farming at Pragna Bhavan.

The workshop, organised under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig and the National Livestock Mission (NLM), focused on empowering progressive pig farmers through modern technologies, scientific practices and sustainable approaches to improve productivity and profitability.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu said pig farming has become an important component of the rural economy because of the high demand for pork and the significant contribution of pigs to meat production in Tripura. He said the state produces around 59.20 thousand metric tonnes of meat annually, while per capita annual meat consumption in Tripura is nearly 14.15 kilograms.

The Governor noted that a major share of the state’s meat consumption comes from pigs, underlining the importance of pig farming for rural livelihoods. He described progressive pig farmers as rural entrepreneurs who are not merely producers but also contributors to the state’s economic development.

According to the Governor, the state government is committed to creating a favourable environment for animal husbandry by facilitating access to technology, scientific knowledge, financial assistance and coordination among various stakeholders. Such measures, he said, are aimed at increasing productivity and the income of animal rearers while generating employment opportunities.

He further stressed the need to develop pig farming into a lucrative and sustainable livelihood activity. The Animal Resources Development Department is implementing several schemes to promote animal husbandry-based economic growth and support farmers engaged in livestock-related activities.

The Governor also appreciated progressive animal rearers for adopting modern technologies and scientific methods to advance animal husbandry in the state. He expressed hope that the workshop would help farmers gain practical knowledge and adopt improved methods for better production and management.

Animal Resources Development Minister Sudharıgshu Das also addressed the programme and highlighted various welfare schemes being implemented by the state government for animal rearers. He encouraged people to take up pig farming using scientific methods so that the sector could provide stronger and more sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The workshop, titled “Empowering Progressive Pig Farmers through Innovative and Scientific Technologies in Pig Farming,” was jointly organised by the Animal Resources Development Department, AICRP on Pig and National Livestock Mission.

An exhibition showcasing different aspects of pig farming was organised as part of the programme. The Governor visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with participating scientists, farmers and organisers. A short documentary on pig farming was also screened during the event.

Ten successful pig farmers were felicitated at the programme. The Governor congratulated the awardees for their achievements and encouraged them to continue adopting innovative and scientific practices.

Experts at the workshop conducted discussions on several important aspects of modern pig farming, including pig health and disease prevention, scientific reproduction, feed management, farm management and marketing. The technical sessions were intended to provide farmers with practical knowledge that could help improve productivity, animal health and profitability.
