The Budget Session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly will commence on March 13 and continue until March 25, setting the stage for crucial policy discussions, legislative proposals, and the presentation of the state’s financial roadmap. The announcement was made by Ratan Lal Nath, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, following a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) held at the Assembly premises.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Nath stated that the session had been formally convened by Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, the Governor of Tripura. The BAC meeting was presided over by Ram Prasad Paul, the Deputy Speaker who is currently performing the duties of the Speaker.
According to Nath, the session will open on March 13 with the Governor’s customary address to the Assembly members. The House will also observe a solemn tribute to the late Assembly Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen, who passed away recently. Members are expected to participate in a discussion commemorating his contributions to the legislative process before the Assembly adjourns for the day.
The highlight of the session will be the presentation of the state budget for the financial year 2026–27 on March 16 by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy. Along with the new budget, the minister will also present the revised estimates for the financial year 2025–26. In addition, a Supplementary Budget for the current financial year will be tabled before the House.
This will mark the third budget presented by Roy during the second term of the BJP-led government in the state. Following the formal tabling of the financial documents, the finance minister will deliver his budget speech outlining the government’s fiscal priorities, development plans, and sectoral allocations.
A day after the budget presentation, the Assembly will introduce three significant legislative bills aimed at strengthening the state’s higher education infrastructure. These include the proposed Tripura University of Health Sciences Bill, which seeks to establish a dedicated medical university in the state. The other two proposed legislations are the Technical University Bill and the Women’s University Bill, both aimed at expanding specialized educational opportunities and strengthening academic institutions in Tripura.

Minister Nath further informed that discussions on the Governor’s address will begin on the third day of the session and continue for two days. The Leader of the Opposition is scheduled to deliver a speech on the budget on March 19, marking the beginning of a series of debates on the state’s financial proposals.
Detailed deliberations on the budget are scheduled for March 20, 23, and 24. These discussions will provide legislators an opportunity to analyze government expenditure, development strategies, and policy priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget is expected to be passed on the final day of the session, March 25.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister emphasized that the session will have a total of nine sitting days. According to him, the schedule has been finalized with the consensus of all members of the Business Advisory Committee, ensuring sufficient time for meaningful discussion on key legislative and development issues.

Earlier media reports had suggested that a new Speaker might be elected during the session following the death of Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen on December 26 last year. However, sources indicated that the formal process for electing a new Speaker has not yet begun, and no official notification has been issued so far.
Political observers are also closely watching the upcoming budget as it is expected to allocate increased funding to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The 30-member autonomous tribal body is likely to head into crucial elections in March or April, making budgetary allocations for tribal development a key point of interest.
