Tripura crosses 7 MW rooftop solar power generation under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a major clean energy milestone with growing public participation, reduced electricity bills, government subsidies, and ambitious targets for renewable power expansion.

Tripura has marked a major achievement in its renewable energy journey by surpassing 7 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar power generation under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY). The milestone reflects growing public participation and the state’s accelerating transition toward clean and sustainable energy sources.

Confirming the development on Saturday, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) spokesperson Bipul Bhowmik described the achievement as a historic step in the state’s pursuit of energy self-reliance. According to officials, electricity generated from rooftop solar installations across Tripura has now exceeded the 7 MW mark, signaling a steady shift away from conventional power dependence.

Beyond the numerical milestone, the achievement highlights Tripura’s commitment to environmentally responsible development. Rooftop solar adoption is playing a key role in reducing carbon emissions, easing pressure on the conventional grid, and empowering consumers to become active contributors to power generation.

Bhowmik said the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has created unprecedented opportunities for electricity consumers. Under the scheme, households installing rooftop solar systems can significantly reduce their electricity bills, often bringing them down to zero. Additionally, surplus electricity generated by these households can be fed back into the government grid, allowing consumers to earn extra income.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, with the vision of transforming ordinary households into small-scale power producers. Its dual objectives are to reduce the financial burden of electricity expenses and to promote renewable energy for a sustainable and climate-friendly future.

Tripura has witnessed a strong response to the initiative. According to TSECL data, 17,601 electricity consumers in the state have already registered under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Rooftop solar installations have been completed in 2,061 households, while 1,746 beneficiaries have successfully received government subsidies.

One of the key drivers of the scheme’s popularity is the generous financial assistance provided by the central government. Consumers are eligible for subsidies of up to Rs 85,800, making rooftop solar installations affordable, particularly for middle-income and lower-income families. Officials believe this financial support has removed a major barrier to clean energy adoption.

Energy experts point out that even a small solar setup can make a significant difference. A one-kilowatt rooftop solar plant can generate an average of 100 units of electricity per month, which is sufficient to meet the power needs of an ordinary household. Any excess electricity generated can be exported to the grid, ensuring long-term savings and additional earnings for consumers.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited has played a vital role in implementing the scheme efficiently. The corporation has been providing technical guidance, conducting awareness campaigns, and simplifying installation and grid connectivity procedures. Officials say these measures have helped build public confidence and accelerated adoption.

Looking ahead, TSECL has set an ambitious target of expanding Tripura’s solar power generation capacity to 50 MW within the next year. If achieved, the target could bring a transformative shift in the state’s power sector, strengthening energy security and reducing reliance on external power sources.

Rising electricity costs have further increased interest in rooftop solar solutions. Power department officials believe that rooftop solar energy offers a practical path toward long-term financial independence for households while supporting the broader goal of sustainable development.

TSECL has urged eligible consumers to take advantage of the PM Surya Ghar scheme by registering through the official government portal or by visiting their nearest corporation office for assistance.

Meanwhile, Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath recently emphasized the vast potential of rooftop solar energy in the state. He stated that if five lakh households install 2 kW rooftop solar panels, Tripura could generate nearly 1,000 MW of power daily, significantly boosting self-sufficiency.

The minister also revealed that rooftop solar systems are being installed in 2,000 government buildings across the state. This project is expected to be completed next year and is projected to generate around 80 MW of electricity, further strengthening Tripura’s renewable energy footprint.

With sustained public participation and policy support, Tripura is emerging as a model state in decentralized solar power generation, reinforcing India’s national mission for clean energy and energy independence.
