Tripura’s Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma inaugurated the 8th Student Project Programme in Agartala, urging students to embrace scientific research and innovation for nation building under the theme “Indigenous Technologies for Sustainable Development.”

Emphasizing the vital role of science in shaping the nation’s future, Tripura’s Science and Technology Minister Animesh Debbarma on Wednesday inaugurated the 8th Student Project Programme organized by the Tripura State Council for Science and Technology (TSCST) at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala.

The two-day event, which aims to promote research and innovation among students across disciplines, underscores the state government’s commitment to nurturing scientific talent and encouraging young minds to explore technological solutions for sustainable growth.

Promoting Scientific Temper and Innovation

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Minister Debbarma stressed the need to make science accessible to every student, regardless of background or stream of study.

“This initiative is part of our ongoing effort to bring science closer to students. We want them to stay connected with scientific thinking during their academic journey and explore small-scale technological innovations. To support this, the Department of Science and Technology is providing financial assistance,” Debbarma said.

The Minister highlighted that cultivating a scientific mindset from a young age helps students not only understand technological progress but also become active contributors to the nation’s development. “Science must reach every student, because innovation begins when curiosity meets opportunity,” he added.

Theme: Indigenous Technologies for Sustainable Development

This year’s Student Project Programme revolves around the theme “Indigenous Technologies for Sustainable Development”, focusing on integrating traditional knowledge with modern science. The initiative encourages students to explore eco-friendly innovations and locally developed technologies that can address environmental challenges and promote sustainable livelihoods.

Student teams from various schools, colleges, and technical institutions across the state presented projects developed over the past year. Their work ranged from biodiversity conservation and organic food processing to renewable energy and waste management innovations—all reflecting the potential of home-grown scientific solutions.

Government Support for Student Research

Minister Debbarma emphasized that the Tripura government is committed to strengthening the scientific ecosystem by funding student-led research initiatives. “The Department of Science and Technology has been allocating dedicated funds to encourage young innovators to take up practical projects that can make a real difference in society,” he said.

He added that research-driven education can significantly contribute to the state’s socio-economic growth by generating sustainable and locally adaptable solutions.

Interactive Learning and Knowledge Sharing

The programme also includes interactive sessions, panel discussions, and knowledge exchange forums where scientists, educators, and students discuss emerging opportunities in the field of science and technology.
Experts from various sectors shared insights on innovation management, scientific entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization, aiming to prepare students for careers that combine research and real-world application.

One of the key highlights of the event was a session on “Transforming Local Knowledge into Scientific Solutions,” which showcased how indigenous practices, when refined through scientific validation, can lead to sustainable outcomes in agriculture, environment, and healthcare.

Encouraging Grassroots Innovation

By integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific research, the Student Project Programme aims to cultivate a generation of innovative thinkers capable of addressing both local challenges and global sustainability goals.
TSCST officials noted that the programme has, over the years, helped identify promising student innovations that were later developed into viable projects with state and national support.

Minister Debbarma reiterated that initiatives like these reflect Tripura’s growing emphasis on science-driven governance. “We are determined to make science not just a subject of study, but a tool for empowerment and sustainable growth,” he said.
