Real Madrid faces Bayern Munich in a crucial Champions League clash as Alvaro Arbeloa seeks a historic comeback. With pressure mounting, injuries and suspensions add to Madrid’s challenge in overturning a first-leg deficit in Munich.
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa faces a defining moment in his managerial career as his team prepares for a crucial UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Spanish giants must produce a dramatic turnaround in Munich to keep their European dreams alive.
Madrid’s hopes were kept alive by a late goal from Kylian Mbappe in the first leg, after Luis Diaz and Harry Kane had given Bayern a commanding two-goal lead. Despite the narrow deficit, history is not on Madrid’s side. The club has previously lost the first leg at home in European knockout competitions seven times and has only managed to overturn such a deficit away once, dating back to the 1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Bayern Munich, by contrast, boasts an exceptional record in such situations. The German champions have successfully advanced in 30 out of 31 instances after securing a first-leg victory away from home. Their only slip came against Inter Milan in 2011, further underlining the magnitude of Madrid’s challenge.
Arbeloa is expected to make key changes to his starting lineup, including recalling Jude Bellingham and Eder Militao, both of whom featured only as substitutes in the first leg. However, the absence of Aurelien Tchouameni due to suspension is a significant blow. The midfielder has been pivotal in shielding the defense this season, especially against high-intensity attacking sides like Bayern.
With Tchouameni unavailable, Eduardo Camavinga is likely to shoulder greater responsibility in midfield, despite recent criticism over inconsistent performances. Defensive concerns also persist, as Raul Asencio is ruled out due to illness, while Ferland Mendy, though included in the squad, is not expected to start.
Madrid’s recent domestic form adds further pressure. A disappointing 1-1 draw against Girona has left them nine points behind FC Barcelona in La Liga with only seven matches remaining. The result drew boos from home fans, highlighting growing frustration with the team’s performances.
Since replacing Xabi Alonso in January, Arbeloa’s tenure has been turbulent. His first match ended in a shock Copa del Rey defeat to lower-division side Albacete, and Madrid has already lost the Spanish Super Cup to Barcelona. With the league title slipping away, the Champions League remains the club’s only realistic path to silverware this season.
Club president Florentino Perez has publicly expressed confidence, insisting that Real Madrid “never gives in.” However, elimination at this stage would not only end their trophy hopes but could also have significant implications for Arbeloa’s future at the club.

As the team heads to Munich, the stakes could not be higher. A comeback would not only revive Madrid’s season but also reaffirm the players’ belief in their coach. For Bayern, however, confidence remains high as they aim to finish the job and secure a place in the semi-finals.
