Chennai Super Kings (CSK) delivered a commanding batting performance to post a competitive total of 192/5 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. A fiery start, followed by calculated middle-order consolidation, ensured CSK maintained control for most of the innings despite a disciplined bowling effort from KKR in the latter stages.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, CSK got off to a flying start, courtesy of an aggressive approach led by Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter wasted no time in asserting dominance, smashing boundaries early and unsettling the KKR bowling attack from the very first over. However, CSK suffered an early setback when skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad once again failed to convert his start, falling cheaply for just seven runs to Anukul Roy.
The highlight of the Power-play came in the form of young Ayush Mhatre, who produced an explosive cameo that electrified the Chepauk crowd. The right-hander scored a blistering 38 off just 17 balls, showcasing fearless stroke play against pacers Cameron Green and Vaibhav Arora. His attacking intent propelled CSK to a strong 72/2 at the end of six overs, setting a solid foundation for a big total.
While Mhatre played the aggressor, Samson anchored the innings with composure and class. He crafted a fluent 48 off 32 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes. Just as he looked poised to reach a well-deserved half-century, Kartik Tyagi struck with a brilliant inswinger that dismantled his stumps, giving KKR a crucial breakthrough.
Following the Power-play fireworks, KKR’s experienced spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, tightened the screws in the middle overs. Their disciplined lines and variations restricted CSK’s scoring rate, allowing only 55 runs between the eighth and 14th overs, effectively halting the momentum built earlier.
However, Dewald Brevis reignited the innings with a well-timed counterattack. The South African youngster scored a valuable 41 off 29 balls, combining aggression with smart shot selection. He found a reliable partner in Sarfaraz Khan, who contributed 23 off 18 deliveries. The pair stitched together a crucial 51-run partnership, helping CSK regain control during a critical phase.
KKR managed to pull things back towards the end, thanks to disciplined bowling. Sunil Narine dismissed Sarfaraz with a clever knuckle-ball, while Kartik Tyagi impressed with his variations during the death overs, finishing with figures of 2/35. His tight final over, which conceded just eight runs, prevented CSK from breaching the 200-run mark.
Despite a slight slowdown in the final overs, CSK’s total of 192/5 remains competitive on a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers. The early aggression from Samson and Mhatre, combined with Brevis’ finishing flourish, ensured the hosts posted a challenging score.
For KKR, Tyagi emerged as the standout bowler with his composure under pressure, while Narine’s spell proved pivotal in controlling the middle overs.
