Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are set to jointly inaugurate three India-assisted development projects via video conferencing on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
These projects include the Akhaura-Agartala cross-border rail link, the Khulna-Mongla Port rail line, and Unit II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
The Akhaura-Agartala rail link, spanning 12.24 km, has been realized with India’s grant assistance of Rs 392.52 crore to Bangladesh. This project comprises a 6.78 km dual gauge rail line in Bangladesh and 5.46 km in Tripura, India.
The Khulna-Mongla Port rail line project, funded under India’s concessional line of credit with a total cost of $388.92 million, involves the construction of approximately 65 km of broad-gauge rail route.
This expansion connects Mongla, Bangladesh’s second-largest port, to the broad-gauge railway network.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power project, with a capacity of 1320 MW, is financed by Indian concessional funding of $1.6 billion. Located in Rampal, Khulna division, this project is a testament to the strong partnership between India’s NTPC Ltd and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). Unit I of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant was unveiled jointly in September 2022, and Unit II will be inaugurated on Wednesday, contributing significantly to enhancing energy security in Bangladesh.
