The plight of the Pekucherra refugees has drawn significant attention as they face dire living conditions. With no access to food or clean water, numerous families are surviving in makeshift shelters constructed from clothes, bamboo, and polythene. These families were displaced due to caste-related riots and sought refuge from various areas, including Anandabazar, Dasda, Gochiram Para, and Jayashree.
Demanding that the administration consider their temporary shelters in the forest area of Pekucherra and not evacuate them, representatives from the refugee families placed a deputation to the North Tripura District Magistrate on Monday.
Addressing reporters, one of the representatives from the day’s delegation stated, “For a long time, we have been facing a lot of challenges. Besides, the forest department’s actions exacerbate our struggle—sometimes disrupting the drinking water supply or occasionally demolishing our fragile homes.”
“We have a simple plea: that the forest department does not evict us from our temporary shelters in the forest land,” they added.
The deputation came after the forest department issued a notice for the third consecutive time, asking the families to vacate the forest land and move out from the area by June 6.
